Obidos, Portugal
Óbidos is derived from the Latin word oppidum, meaning "citadel", "fortified city". Around it stands the Roman town of Eburobrittium.
Have been taken from the Moors in 1148, it received the first town charter in 1195 under the reign of King Sancho I. Óbidos was part of the dowry of several queens of Portugal, namely Urraca of Castile (wife of D. Afonso II), Queen Isabel (wife of King Dinis), Philippa of Lancaster (wife of John I.), Leonor of Aragon (wife of King Edward), Eleanor of Portugal (wife of John II), among others.
In 1527, 161 people lived in the village, which would correspond to about one tenth of the city population. The walled area was already at that time equal to the current, ie 14.5 ha.
From Óbidos was born the municipality of Caldas da Rainha, formerly called Caldas de Óbidos (this change was due to the seasons Queen Leonor stayed there). Óbidos stays in the Centre region of Portugal, in the district of Leiria.
The 16th February 2007, the castle of the city received the diploma of a candidate as one of the seven wonders of Portugal.

One of seven wonders must be a special place and that is what it is . An almost untouched medieval relic lying in wonderful harmony with the surrounding white housed and red roofs, as to my sunset just took about 40 to achieve that one! Photography is luck and/or hard work! 5
