"The Citadel" _
The Citadel of the old Brigantia is a fortified area which was rebuilt in the twelfth century.
In the center of the four cylindrical towers of the castle, stands the donjon (castle keep).
The walls include 15 turrets and three doors, and are crowned by a patrol path.
In the enclosure around, just aside Santa Maria Church, a curious pillory based on Boar (Pig) stone recalls the Celtic peoples who inhabited the region and the unique pentagonal Domus Municipalis, where in medieval times the Senate was meeting hall, is a beautiful and rare example of Romanesque civil architecture.
Bragança is the most northeastern district capital of continental Portugal (there are 18 "districts"). This city has its origins from two centers: the core city and the village. Connecting the village and town are two streets: the Right Road (Rua Direita) and Back Street (Rua de Trás).
The ancient city would be in the place where today stays the See/”Cathedral” (Sé). It was a Neolithic settlement and formed the basis of a Roman city. With the barbarian invasions and wars between Moors and Christians it disappeared. In 1130 it was restored, on the top of a hill, a few hundred meters away. The village of Benquerenças took place and it was built up the castle, where we found the Domus Municipalis. Out around the castle and inside the walls, the town has grown and expanded to include “outdoor” spaces. The extinct city returned to revive and soon the two towns came together, and the name was that was the oldest.
