This is a male Black Oystercatcher [Haematopodidae bachmani], one of a mating pair photographed in Port Valdez, Alaska. These large, dumpy, short-legged shorebirds have long red bills that are flattened laterally. The chisel-like bill is used to pry shellfish off rocks and to open the two shells of a mollusk. They nest in beach gravel often near grass line. This male was photographed atop a shipping container while its partner sat nearby on gravel.
