You've actually been there! This is one of the biggest tragedies of the modern era. I did some studies on the aral sea and it is shocking to realize that it is not simply the drying that is the problem.

In the background you can spot the northern half the Aral Sea. It was separated from the main Sea with a huge barrage to save at least this part filled by the Syr Darya River. Consequently the southern part is doomed to dry out completely as it is left without a feeder (the Amu Darya doesn't reach the Aral Sea anymore).
