"Back to the past" _ The first historical reference to the Linhares castle date from some time in the first three years of the reign of King Sancho I (2nd portuguese king in late twelfth century), linked to an invasion of that stretch of the border by forces of the kingdom of León.
Although it’s not known the primitive setup of this castle, it’s believed to have shown traces of the Romanesque style, with the donjon isolated inside the parade ground and surrounding fences adapted to the terrain.
With peace, the castle lost its strategic role, and there is no news of it until the seventeenth century, when the public clock was installed in its tower.
At an elevation of 820 meters above sea level, the castle has an irregular organic plant (adapted to the terrain), in Romanesque and Gothic, spread over two uneven venues walls in granite: in the west, at higher elevation, the citadel, with roughly triangular plan includes the square, dominated by the castle keep; in the east, at lower bound, with approximately trapezoidal plan, the one which involved the primitive village.
Linhares is one of the 12 Historical Villages of Portugal (in the region of interior Beira, at the centre of the country, at the east of the highest mountain, Serra da Estrela). It satys in the concelho of Celorico da beira, district of Guarda.

You provided us with a wealth of interesting information, thus offering food for the mind. But it's mainly the eye greedily absorbing the picture with its impressive massive structures, dynamic perspective, excellent contrast and textures, rhythm of the bricks, mysterious atmosphere....
