A nice story and photo report. I remember me that when I was young my mother had a same washing machine as at your photos ( had no electric ) My father was the one who moved the machine with the wooden stick. Lucky for him some years later we got electric in the house.

I can pretty much imagine how hard it must have been, poor wimen...have you ever seen the movie The Magdalene sisters?..well it's one of my favorites and ther is a lot of laundry work in there with tragical stories hidden behind the snow white clean laundry...you made a great blog Trudy, great document of past times!

It's good we have modern laundry machines now. These pic's make me think of the time when I went to a public laundry place with my mother, to do the big pieces, like sheets. That was in the pre washing machine era.

very interesting blog, Trudy ; and that comfort my thoughts : i could do without many things as mobile, TV, fridge ... but never without my washing machine !!
