guldbaggen 2009

Guldbaggen 2009

Tonight I spend the night in a Swedish church close to my house in Rotterdam? And the reason? I have a son living in Sweden and he is a director of cinematography and working mostly in Sweden. I try and follow offcourse everything what he is filming, sometimes difficult but when I am lucky films appear in my neighbourhood on film festivals. Last winter I was very lucky to see a film of him on the Rotterdam film festival and since I saw this film last February it was shown all over the world and got so many prices that I stopped to count them. Even Robert the Niro was involved once, he offered yet an other price on the Tribeca Film festival in New York. The name of the film is; Let the right one in.

But why the Swedish church? Some time ago I heard that my son was nominated for the Guldbaggen Award, in Holland we would say “ Gouden Kalf “ and in America maybe the Oscar for best cinematography in this film.

I live next to a villa, I pass it every day, and in this villa is housed a Swedish church, mainly for the sailors in a harbour town like Rotterdam. I pass it on my dogwalking round and one day I noticed satellites on the roof and I started to combine. I saw on the internet that this whole Guldbaggen Gala was broadcasted on Swedish television. So I rang the bell and asked if maybe I and my family could see this television registration of this Gala. And yes, offcourse we could, so tonight we sat in the library of this church and very happily and proudly saw my son win this price! The bad thing was that just when he started his speech he was cut because his speech was just out of time for television.

And now, what has this all to do with Woophy? You all know Joris, founder and owner of Woophy. But Woophy was not founded by Joris alone, he did it together with his brother Hoyte. But Hoyte moved and Joris stayed.

Finally I can recommend you all to go and see this movie, it is shown all over the world and you can find on internet where and when. Even if you don’t like vampires like I do, you really have to see this movie because of the wonderful shot images.

Thank you all for your sweet, kind and "over-the-top" generous remarks.
Yesterday's guldbagge win was a crown on a fantastic year, with many unexpected and incredible successes for the film, Tomas, myself and the rest of the crew.
We have been extremely lucky, and privileged, and it is going to be hard to top this for a long time (if, ever?)

greetings,
Hoyte

If some of you are still interested to read about the cinematographic "approach" in "Let the right one in", you can read some reflections in the following article:

First of all, Giz, I want to congratulate your son Hoyte for his prize, so well deserved as I have read! Then, to congratulate you, Joris and all your family.
This film was seen in Lisbon, in the 28th of April 2008, at the 6th International Festival of Independent Cinema. The portuguese critics were great! : (translating;)) "... What seems to be a horror movie is much more than that, is a drama with a touch of romance and a story involving everything absolutely spectacular. It doesn't fall in the usual clichés of the genre and holds the viewer until the last second. Possessor of a wonderful photo, "Let The Right One In" further rises in the classification by the fabulous performance of key players, only 12 years, who convinced and hold the attention of the viewer."
For those who want to know more about it, please see: http://www.lettherightoneinmovie.com/ .
Many magazines, papers and webcritics nominated it as the best film of 2008 (for instance, http://www.efilmcritic.com/feature.php?feature=2643).
In my country, now I hope to watch it at the FantasPorto (maybe the best, or one of the best european Festivals of Fantastic Cinema) this year;).
Once again, my congrats and all the best for your son next sucess!

He as well you and the rest of the family must be so proud as this is a big award in Sweden! Only very talented people in the movie world get such a prize!!!
I will see the movie before heading back to Santos, of course! And will go to Blackeberg and see if I get inspired and take nice shots on the area the movie was filmed!;)
Wish Hoyte lots of success!
Hugs

Hello Giz,
I already browsed the web to look at this film. It looks so good, with superb pictures... a pity it is not broadcasted as all the very commercial movies. I really hope to have the opportunity to wtach it in the future. Congratulations to Hoyte (He sent superb pictures to Woophy and I find some affinities with the movie's pictures)
