Things Are Not The Way They Used To Be

Dear Woophians,
some weeks ago I went hiking in the Western Alps for 3 days. My destination was Lago della Goletta, a lovely lake placed at the height of 2700 mt. in one of the best preserved valleys in the region called Val d'Aosta, where three nations (Italy, France and Switzerland) make a terrible tangle with their borders (did you know that it is still uncertain in which country is placed the peak of Monte Bianco, Europe's highest mountain? But this is another story...)
After a steep ascent, I reached the lake. An amazing place. A wide, deserted, rocky plane under the peak of Granta Parei, with the little lake like a green jewel in the middle. I took some nice pictures.
But... where was the glacier? I remembered that in 1991 there was a huge, shimmering mass of ice on the mountain side above the lake, exactly where, now, I could see only dark rocks.
A bad joke from my memory?
When at home, I checked among my old photographs. And there I found an old picture of me, in front of the same lake.
The difference is amazing, and I'd like to show you the two pictures:
Lago della Goletta today. The peak behind is Granta Parei.
... and this is my old picture taken in Summer 1991. To be more exact, the pic was taken by my wife Ada. The handsome young man who stands proudly in front of the lake is a younger (and much thinner) TBM. Please notice how much wider was the glacier. Notice also the thickness of the ice layer at the bottom, where the glacier meets the lake

Proof for those who would deny the existence of global warming in all their naievity.

a very interesting blog, as well by the story (not boring at all )
than by images ; it's a good witness, obviously ! i think we are all guilty but this doesn't make us dismiss ,eventhough, in one hand we waste the Earth, we can,by some little acts "save" it or at least, try to do ; if you read BadWolf's blog, you're surely, as all of us, in the 1% ( or for the best of us, in the 5% ) but we can go on sorting, wasting as less as possible, etc .. just a water drop in an ocean but better than nothing .

Thank you for this good report and photo's of it.
History has learnt us there is nothing new on earth, this happened for million of years, earth is changing all the way he exist, and still he will.
It's good when we are carefull with our earth of course, but if I ask you, are you willing to live in a earth-hole, by a fire of wood, without TV, PC and so on, what do you say than???

Do we have all contributed to this being bad. We are all guilty. What next? Continue or say STOP. Is it already too late to do anything? I hope not too late.

Such a shame to see our beautiful world changing for the worst! Great of you to show those 2 pictures to the world and hopefully they will make people at little bit more aware of their surroundings! Of course it´s not the small hopeless individuals that are responsible for the big climatic changes and geographical disasters...but if we all do our bit at least it we can hope it won´t get much worse!
Regards

Your pictures can well be placed among all the others that proof global warming is happening right now and for all to see. Still, and this amazes me, there are people, even scientists that tell us not to worry, it's not that bad.

Unfortunately, it is not only here that the defrost is happening. And only 18 years! Yours is a document to be shown to our children. Maybe they will be wiser than us.

Eh oui Mario, est ce que c'est le phénomène des vases communiquants? Nous étions tous plus minces 20 ou 30 ans avant, et les glaciers de notre planète maifrisent... I'm joking, but this phenomeous is more and more increasing. Les gens se remplissent et la terre se vide. Celà me fait penser à une chanson d'Alain Souchon, french singer : "on est foutus, on mange trop..." Est ce que l'un est la conséquence de l'autre? peut-etre..... certainement.....

I made the same experience this summer in the Massif de Ecrins (France) searching the glacier at the same place as I was mountainclimbing 20 years ago... :o( younger and thinner i was also at these times!
