The Atlantic Walker Explained

Posted by SJS on July 6th, 2011 | 8 comments | 278 views
This is to explain the context of my last photo posted, #1202668, with its deep black framing of the ocean, a solitary man walking and the windows of a building on the left. [Sorry that my text for each of these pictures is not exactly synchronised. Each text should be next to the photo numbered 1-5, but I have given up trying to align them. But, it's not difficult to follow.]

Also, in response to the suggestion to crop down the frame, I have experimented with that, which is the first photo here:

(1) .

(2) .

Next, this version which was kindly edited by Abílio Silveira andmuch appreciated by me.

Abilio converted it to B/W, but he was also able to have the walker more intensified. I tried but could not get that result, so for me, his version is definitely better.

(3) This shows you what I used to make that deep black frame - a sign.

For the posted photo, I pointed the camera from under the bottom line of this sign.

(4) This shot shows the restaurant with the windows that are the only parts visible in my posted version:

(5), Finally, this was shot "sideways"/vertically, and was backlit only, for silhouetting.

An excellent lesson on the art of photography. Woophy is here in the school and we have excellent teachers like you.
Thanks for your ideas shared here in the blog.
Abraços, Helena.

@ Perfidus, LOL!! I can't imagine hitting anybody because of their opinion! Or downrating them:-)). Thanks!

I prefer the first one...I don't know why and, please, don't hit me about my opinion....

Thanks Bernhard. I feel the same way about it. Ambivalent now after looking at it so much.
I had also played that game with the monitor, driving up the lighting to reveal a terribly noisy blue wording. Then driving i down again.
I am really terrible, technically, these days (no patience with digital) and it shows. Together with a moribund camera, there is not much more to hope for, unfortunately:-).

Thank you for the "making of". I first thought you took the photo standing under a bridge, but then I was irritated by the blue letters (good test for your monitor, seeing the blue letters in the upper black part...).
At first I didn't like the photo very much because of the technical flaws, but then I kept coming back to look at it. Trying to attempt an interpretation, different stories came to my mind. I like photos that provoke this.
