Try to guess the author's name till Wednesday night, the 8th April (Easter Holidays;)), (maybe also the decade it was taken), when I'll reveal his/her name .

You may post your guess since now! Suggestion: if you are convinced you really guessed, please let the master's name initials, instead, as well as for someone well known in his/her pictures) for others to go on trying! Thanks.

I'll post 3 pics from each photographer to show different views from himself, and to make it easier to guess. After his/her name revelation, I'll post at least some more photos just for your extended pleasure, as well as a new Master work for a new turn in the game ;)

You may choose, also, to make some comments on the pics themselves, both in a "woophyan" way as you do in your comments [don't hesitate to criticize a Master, for bad or good;)], or in a more general point of view, if you like. Thanks and enjoy!

And the answer is: Elliott Erwitt

Some quotes from the Master:

[Photographer needs:] creativity, style, elegance, wit and craft. [A photojournalist also needs that and] courage, stamina, cunning and luck. - Elliott Erwitt

Balance of light is the problem, not the amount. Balance between shadows and highlights determines where the emphasis goes in the picture...make sure the major light in a picture falls at right angles to the camera. - Elliott Erwitt

To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place.... I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them. - Elliott Erwitt

All the technique in the world doesn’t compensate for the inability to notice. - Elliott Erwitt

The whole point of taking pictures is so that you don’t have to explain things with words. - Elliott Erwitt

Photography is a craft. Anyone can learn a craft with normal intelligence and application. To take it beyond the craft is something else. That's when magic comes in. And I don't know that there's any explanation for that. - On the Question: "What marks the difference between a competent photographer and a really great photographer?" - Elliott Erwitt

Being shy is quite useful to a photographer, because it gives you the opportunity of not being shy once you have the field of a camera before you. It protects you from being shy. - Elliott Erwitt

You can find pictures anywhere. It's simply a matter of noticing things and organizing them. You just have to care about what's around you and have a concern with humanity and the human comedy. - Elliott Erwitt

Nothing happens when you sit at home. I always make it a point to carry a camera with me at all times...I just shoot at what interests me at that moment. - Elliott Erwitt

Digital photography has made every man, woman, child and chimpanzee a photographer of sorts and consequently has numbed down the general quality of photographs.... - Elliott Erwitt

I am unspecialized in a very specialized profession. Some commercial clients aren't quite sure how to take me. Some probably think I'm dead because I've been around so long. - Elliott Erwitt

ELLIOTT ERWITT
(1928 - )

Elliott Erwitt (b. 26 July 1928 Paris, France) is an advertising and journalistic photographer known for his black and white candid shots of ironic and absurd situations within everyday settings -- the master of the "indecisive moment".
American, born in Paris to Russian immigrant parents, Erwitt spent his childhood in Milan, then emigrated to the US, via France, with his family in 1939. As a teenager living in Hollywood, he developed an interest in photography and worked in a commercial darkroom before experimenting with photography at Los Angeles City College. In 1948 he moved to New York and exchanged janitorial work for film classes at the New School for Social Research.
Erwitt traveled in France and Italy in 1949 with his trusty Rolleiflex camera. In 1951 he was drafted for military service and undertook various photographic duties while serving in a unit of the Army Signal Corps in Germany and France.
While in New York, Erwitt met Edward Steichen, Robert Capa and Roy Stryker, the former head of the Farm Security Administration. Stryker initially hired Erwitt to work for the Standard Oil Company, where he was building up a photographic library for the company, and subsequently commissioned him to undertake a project documenting the city of Pittsburgh.
In 1953 Erwitt joined Magnum Photos and worked as a freelance photographer for Collier's, Look, Life, Holiday and other luminaries in that golden period for illustrated magazines. To this day he is for hire and continues to work for a variety of journalistic and commercial outfits.
In the late 1960s Erwitt served as Magnum's president for three years. He then turned to film: in the 1970s he produced several noted documentaries and in the 1980s eighteen comedy films for Home Box Office. Erwitt became known for benevolent irony, and for a sense of humor touched with melancholy, as well as a humanistic sensibility traditional to the spirit of Magnum. His work has been widely exhibited and is in the permanent collections of important museums and galleries and private collectors around the world.

I saw a great number of his photos and they are so humorous I'm buying a book through Amazon. I think one deserves a book like this after having put up with Woophians for a year :))) Just kidding. Thanks to all and specially to Miguel, whose absence was "pungent" too.

I already know who the photographer is....savoir français est très bon...j'ai trouvé un article du Figaro sur lui...so now I've become an expert on photography. Thanks, Miguel.....you're a really good teacher, motivation is one of the main weapons to teach how to learn.
BTW, I wish you relaxing Easter holidays...forget school and take photos for us to see.
E que o FCP ganhe, carago!

Through google we can find lots of things...( but, Paulo, not the result of M-FCP's match, I'm afraid!!)
I'm still trying...I know he's French...that's a start.

a reporter said of him "Ses photos sont pétillantes et se savourent comme le champagne. Elles grisent et piquent" ; i think these words are perfect to caracterize his work but, unfortunately, they would loose all their "pungency" with a translation :)

I know the photo n°3 and the photographer is easy to find with a google search.
# posted by A.Miguel Oliveira on March 27th, 2009 3:33 pm
@Abílio: yes, Sérgio is a bad guy, he tells everything saying he belongs to Magnum ;)))). Hehehe, Abílio, I think this Master is the right one for these days at Woophy! Try to see his whole collection: he his really the man who makes me laugh for a wonderful catch: photography at its best;)
# posted by Zeeg on March 27th, 2009 3:33 pm
Ok I got it, thanks to your clue Sercas. A very creative photographer with a good sense of humour indeed.

@Abílio: Thanks for the Pink;).
Regarding the Masters: try to buy any of those small books from Taschen (7€), like "Fotografia do século XX", for instance.
A great (and more expensive) book is "Master Photographers" by Pat Booth (at Mcmillan), in english.
@Joris: Oops, it was also my wedding pic at the central table;)))
@Sérgio: next time, and only for you;))), I'll ask for the third letters in their names;). In this case, it should be, as you know, L+W...;). Thanks for saying you enjoy the game. It takes me such a hard work to held it, that it's good to know some members will go on enjoying!
Oh, yes, he's a great humourist and the biggest in dog's portraits in action;)
@Paulo: sim, na Fnac vê os Taschen baratuchos;). Oh yes, this Master has his book closed to colourful frames;))). Anyway, if anyone from Woophy could be misleaded as the author of some of his pics, it should be you (for the humour and the portraits of cat's friends, mr.dogs;) or Akbar (for the street photography).
@Zeeg: yes, that pic was taken in France (Provence)!;). Though he is not french, he was born there, from russian parents, and lived in Italy, before becoming an ... citizen;). Thank you for coming to the blog!

For sure N°2 is shot in France (typical french hat "béret" and bread), but I had a look at some french Masters galleries and I did'nt find. No idea...
