@ Elly: any question about Canon DPP be free to ask, even if you feel it may be an "obvious" answer.
Do you know how to start? And how to finish with conversion and editing (saving the result)?
Do your doubts regard "middle" work, I mean, the editing itself?
Well, when you need, please ask. It will be a pleasure to help with it. (one day it will be myself who will need some help, maybe, with photoshop layers; I'll start from zero, then)

For all those who never tried Lightroom... give it a try! It's beautiful its layout and organization. I'm still a basic learner but I like it (like Mike Jagger).

Best regards
M.

Dearest Miguel,

I have Lightroom installed, and I do use it on occasions, but come what may I always revert to ACDSee Pro.

ACDSee is by far quicker than Lightroom, plus it doesn't hog my meagre machine's resources. But the main drawback of ACDSee is that it does not preserve the transparency in GIF and PNG files after editing.

Regards.

PS: Probably you may already know that Mr. Cameron used software developed by ACDSee in the making of Titanic.

@Jan, you are so very right! Aftershot Pro doesn't have red-eye correction.

@Elly: when you like!
@ NGC300: I'll have a look at ACDSee Pro
Interesting that my delay in trying Photoshop is... machine resources swallowing. With Lightroom I don't feel it, as it even works with the "virtual" image, not spoiling the original. I do like it. Anyway, I do think one must use the software with which we feel better, I mean, the one that fills our needs and we know as well as possible. That's why I always start with Canon DPP (at the very least for raw converting, but normally also for the minimum adjustments).
Well, I'll check ACDSee as soon as I get it and have a free time and will let you know my opinion. Thank you.

Best regards

M.O.

As I only use a Macbook Pro, I usually import photos through I'photo and it offers immediate correction of photos, straightening, cropping, exposure, effects, etc. Anyway I still use Picasa - and Picnik ( a new feature) to modifcy the format, frame or transform any pic.

I used to trust photofiltre when I had a Wndows system, but Macs are not compatible with it.

I don't have photoshop and I don't think i'll need it. I also discovered that I can change my pics using Word for Mac and as I make textbooks it is very practical to change the photo when it's already inserted in a text, as we do with Powerpoint.

I wish I had a good camera - mine is a Leica D-Lux 3 - so that I could take better pics, but I wouldn't be able to carry a lot of heavy gear each time I go out so it would be a waste to buy a Canon or a Nixon.
I like photo taking - I'm a freak - but not an expert.

love

As A.Miguel Oliveira says Lightroom is great for organizing and never spoils your original picture.
I have been using it for 3 years now. For me it is the best way to archive pictures. The edit module is very basic, but it is just what I need.
A new version is just out in the market.

This is not meant to undermine Lightroom in any manner, but isn't it strange that this powerhouse of a photo-organizer lacks Selection Editing and Layers Blending?

I Use Adobe Bridge to sort out my Raw files......first selection.......

From there i open them in Adobe Camera Raw to do some basic corrections like saturation, sharpness etc etc........and from there i go further in Adobe Photoshop CS5.......

I am really NOT an expert CS5 user, ok i know some basic thing, but overall, i use only filters.....

Greetz.....

Finally the latest version of GIMP has single-window mode , along with long-anticipated layer groups, on-canvas text editing and advanced brush dynamics.

Hi,

If you want a software to edit and add especial effects I suggest
It's a free online program with some editing tools and with very nice effects you can add to your images.

I use sometimes, directly from where I also post pictures. We have an option to edit our pictures in picmonkey directly from our portfolios....When I'm done I can replace my original picture or save it in my page and keep it as a private document.

Some features will cost money in the future, but at the moment it's completely free and funny!!!
See one exemple here:

I use a simple photo editor called Photo Brush 5.30 by Media Chance & a host of photoshop plug ins depending on my situations & photo subjects. Also,I never shoot RAW but just superfine jpeg. If any member is interested, you can download a free copy of Photo Brush for a trial period & here is the link:
http://www.mediachance.com/pbrush/
p.s. Photo Brush accepts most of the photoshop plug ins & it can scan your computer if you are using any photoshop plug ins installed & it synchronizes the plug ins into its programme without you having to install the plug ins again.
Best regards from Kuala Lumpur

I have just downloaded Capture One for testing. It's fully functional (trial mode) for 60 days without a licence.

Has anyone else used it before?

Has anyone tried FotoSketcher?

It's really a fun way to convert digital images into pencil sketches, pen and ink drawings or various painting styles (watercolor, oil painting etc.). Just load the photo, select the desired sketch style and the application will instantly apply the effect.

You can tweak various drawing parameters to simulate different drawing styles, add a photo frame or text, and save the digital sketch as new image without changing your original photo.

In addition to sketch and paint conversions, Fotosketcher can also apply vintage photo and sepia effects.

Alas, this nifty French-coded freeware is available for Windows only.

Picasa also has new features as pencil, paint, lomo, HDRish and so on.
Besides there is a creative workset available with ample modes to do a lot with your pictures.
If they introduce layers and brushes for local effects I am done with everything else!

Startrails is a specialised star-trail stacking Windows application.

StarStax is a multi-platform alternative, but lacks animation compared to the former.
