During centuries Algarve, south of Portugal, had influence from Arabs who invade this land. That influence we can see today in a lot of details as the chimneys used in a lot of old houses. A lot of them were destroyed but this legacy remains in many more, still alive…
The chimney was a symbol of status and vanity of the owner of the house. There weren’t two alike. They were all different, in form, in color and dimension. Painted mostly in white because the heat - the white was the color of the houses - each one had its particular detail. The complexity and the beauty of the construction depended of the richness of the owner, his vanity or the power he had in the region. Everyone was handmade and a symbol of popular art. “You want a chimney of how many hours?” asked the stonemason, master in chimneys. More details, more hours and more expensive.
The chimney, besides the useful function in the house, was a particular ornamental element where usually people dated the construction.
In Alentejo, the chimneys were also influenced by Arabs but are different, bigger and with fewer details, however an impressive decorative element.
Today the tradition still remains but mostly with pre constructed chimneys in concrete, made in series, all equals in half a dozen of different designs, but still a decorative element in the top of the houses.
In this blog we can share images and show here chimneys all over the world.

Another interesting chemney
geert@ It seems that there are a lot of polution. However if that is a cooling tower of a steelworks plant, for instance, it's just water steam... Great pictures.
Toga@ Maybe North of Portugal or Spain. A house of a rich man, a palace or something alike
Well done
