I thought it would be interesting not to post your most unrated or over rated photos, but perhaps share one of your most recent thoughtful or insightful comment and/or critique from a fellow Woophy member.
Indirectly it might encourage each of us, including myself to look more into the photography and connect with it through our personal experiences and share them, and also offer constructive feedback. Last but not least it might be an invigorating experience to read thought some of the most insightful comment to photography.
So perhaps I will share one of mine to start,
"This could be a scene taken out of a Stanley Kubrick's movie, 2001 Space Odyssey, for example. An unexpected black piano surrounded by a clear and soft atmosphere. The cherry on top of the cake would be listening a pianist playing Stravinsky..."
thank you Abílio Silveira

Thanks for this very good topic Thomas, This is a good opportunity to thanks our friends who gave these comments.
I begin with this nice poem about my gargoyls. Sans état d'âme, Nous attendons Le retour du soleil " and english translation : (through automatic transloator, i'm lazy tonight...) Stony imps Vomit their waters on us mortal Poor men It is in the vulgar gargoyles as it would be doubted It, That it is up to lead the ball. We remain plated, Against the wall the similar A of subjected sentinels, Guards of the north side Of the cathedral. Without mood, We wait for The return of the sun
I look for others one

and Bernadette, thank you for your nice comment. and in French again:
'.....Il nous faut regarder Ce qu'il y a de beau Le ciel gris ou bleuté, les filles au bord de l'eau, l'ami qu'on sait fidèle, le soleil de demain......' Monsieur Brel is still with us, and his songs are a part of our life because his words are true, right, sensible. You have understood that I am a Brel lover. Thanks really for these picture.

"ahah, Bernadette caught the only tree in Venice... Well seen, good snapshot. I would advice you to correct the slanted lines of the buildings -"
Ops, you forgot to fill with water...
"Incredible what you can do with the Photoshop clone tool ... Jokes aside, a stunning picture, the repetiton of seagulls is balanced by the repetition of stones."

a comment on another of my Jacques Brel-photo's; and it's Jackfre again (thanks):
a great man, Jacques Brel. I feel his death as very painful. He was my god. I quote him: To be bourgeois is to have a certain type of materialism. You have to think of what that means. It means everything that destroys dreams, everything that destroys anything attractive. That's what being bourgeois means for me. It means security. It's a type of mediocrity of the spirit. It's everything I dislike.

Again. I want to use this topic to send a special thank to Paulo Calafate for all his comments. He always give a personnal advice or indicate a way to improve the picture. Really I appreciate a lot. We have the feeling that he takes time to really see the picture. Merci Paulo!
This is one of his last comments as an example. indeed a strange attitude very well captured. Good composition with the people very well placed in diagonal way giving by this way a good depth sensation. I like the hard light and the soft colors that are typical of this country. Thank you for your comments. Salut.

I felt greatly honoured by the following two comments on the best picture I made so far:
1. posted by TBM on October 6th, 2008 6:49 pm Incredible how many interesting things are inside this picture, and how magically they are blended togheter! The beautiful unusual colours of the late sunset, fading to deep blue; the strong, sharp perspective lines, enhanced by the repetition of the two mills; the mysterius fog rolling over the canal; the reflections. And, over there, a moon crescent... FAV!!
2. posted by Bluesbuster on October 8th, 2008 8:26 pm It's cool, it's great, it's cold and warm at the same time, all future mill pictures will have to compete with this one

"A very inspirating picture. About 30 years ago, a french compositor, St Preux wrote a music 'the piano under the sea'. your picture make me remember this music, and this is a good memory, because it was my favourite when I was expecting my eldest son. "
Thank you much Bernadette for sharing your thoughts

I think this is really creative suggestion because we all feel comments like : very nice" or " good" or even "excellent" do not say much.
My doubt is about people's knowledge of English, which ( as a teacher of English) I notice isn't that esay for everybody. Sometimes people would like to say more but they can't, that's why they use the same clichés: good compo, nice POV, etc.
Abílio is one of the most encouraging photographers on Woophy and I like his comments because they show appreciation both positive and negative.
Let's try nevertheless...you can always write in your own language if you're the same nationality.
Regards

My dear friend SJS wrote things like this ( I saved them all)

An extraordinary landscape. Never seen rocks like these, that remind me of vine-leaves, the kind that the Greeks stuff with minced meat. Dolmades? MMMmmmm.

I come back with this topic proposed by Thomas. Was a bit surprised : only 1 page of comments, when some "other" topics grow to 4 pages in only 2 days. A pity this topic has not been more successful Nevertheless, I'll try to re-launch it, this is a few example of what you can say about a picture, or some advices you can suggest : "Une trés belle photo de contrejour : les voutes créent une belle composition, la lumière croît harmonieusement jusqu'à l'arrière plan, et elle est bien dosée sur le sol. Un léger manque de netteté (faite sans trépied ?). Je regrette surtout que les deux solhouettes "s'écrasent" un peu : cela valait le coup d'attendre pour n'en avoir qu'une seule. Malgré toutes ces acerbes critiques, ca vaut un 5 " from Aline. You're right Aline, a lack of sharpness, I don't use tripode (may be after xmas..), and the 2 silhouettes are too close... and I don't take your remarks as critics, but like a constructive advice. Thanks for it. From Geert good light and dark; nice photo (though it's pity the sign is hanging there; well, it's there....) Right one more time, I tought of removing the signs, but I'm incredibly lazy And about this one From Christian C Very good composition. I like the contrast between the simplicity of the building and boarding lines, with all the details reflected by the mirror. I don't agree with TBM about cropping the top of the building. and from TBM Very interesting picture! The black building over there looks mysterious, and creates an amazing contrast with the golden light reflected by the boardings. I suggest a crop on top, taking away all the roof of the building. 2 different advices, I followed the suggestion of Mario, and effectively the picture was better on my opinion, but Christian liked it as it was first.
These are just some examples of suggestions I have received, I can assure that I have appreciated and never been upset.
Up to you now, go through your portfolio, and I'm sure you will find also a lot of this type of comments. This is also a way to give a big thanks to the authors for having taking time to explain more deeply what they think. Isn't a good way to finish this year?

Hi everyone!!
Virginia B wrote something about how dificult it results for people, like me, that don't speak english. She's all right !!! many times I wanted to comment more about a photo, but I don't know how to right in the correct way, so I just put "Beautiful", "Great colours", Wonderful", Great shot", etc., etc. Even this few words, first, I wrote them in a piece of paper, correct and saw the Spanish-English Webster Dictionary to let me put it in the correct spelling.
So thanks Virginia B, for understand us!!

Geert Geenen added the following comment at this picture:
you've caught this scene very well, martin; right moment, good expressions; sharp too; and i like the b&w; the winning hand is on the photo, all eyes are spotted on it; one pity: the other hand is cut off (not photographed?) i a not so nice ...
He is right. I had a look at my original to see if I cropped the hand, but unfortunately I had not. I must have been focussing on the faces to much. One to remember.

my photo caption: For a while I could not wait til winter was over but then when it finally began to slip away I became a little sad. Perhaps because it reminded me how time seems to pass on, with and without us.
comment by Jan Hemels the circle of life Thomas at 63 you are getting used to it, but at 36 you are still mostly focused on the future whereas you should enjoy the present day! Snow or hail, rain or sun there is always a reason to have fun!
thank you Jan for your wise and witty comment, indeed a thought to savor
