This month Ruud~ and I run a new Unofficial Contest into my forum topic Most beautiful picture of. It has a great succes and I'm very happy with this.
As I made this topic just for fun it turns into a contest that works very good and everybody is very happy with it. But I don't know if people want to chat about the pictures that where posted or if they have a question. Also it could be fun to show us your second most beautiful and tell us what made your choice. For these things there isn't enough space in the Contest. And if we do this into the contest then it turns in a real mess.

So if anybody has a question or something else then do it right here in this topic.

Regards,

Oscar

Number 2

this photo is my best rated one in april; it's taken in nijmegen, my hometown. nevertheless i've chosen for another one: north sea. among the 2000 photo's i have uploaded on woophy at that moment, there was no sea-picture. i seldom see the sea. by accident (we have taken the wrong way back home), we arrived at katwijk aan zee. so beautiful! so: that's why.

"...participating is the most important part of it"; Oscar these are your words about the Unnoficial contest and they are so true...
I partcipate on this contest from my very start on Woophy, or to be more precise, since I "discovered" forum...I see this contest as a great oportunity to let others know that you and your photos exist...I think that this mont is the firts time that I've chosen a photo with the highest number of votes, but not becouse of votes but becouse it is one of my favorites...I usually choose the photo which was uquite unnoticed before and for which I would like to be seen...

@Geert, thank you so much to share this nice story about your pic of the month. It is nice to know why you come to this descision. It makes clear that we all have personal feelings about our pictures. We as members don't know why you make such a descision.

And Geert how long did you take to choose a pic of your portfolio ? For me it is always a hard time, did anybody else have this problem to ?

@Lali, I'm glad you both entered the contest and also the forums. It is a big fun to participate. Look at the pictures that are already placed. I missed these beauties also without this contest.
I like your choice of pictures that are not well seen.

this is a good idea oscar to start a topic just to discuss the contest!

i have really bad time to choose one of my pictures.. i haven't decided yet witch one i should enter.. in april i posted mostly animal pictures and i'm not conviced of any off them.
well mayby i get help from anyone of you! at least it just started and i will think about it till tonight.

Lali: you are right, the constest is a nice opurtunity for the members to lok at your picrues!

geert: i like the sunset better... (mayby just because i never see the sea at all )

Well Oscar (and Ruud) you hit the nail on the head (Dutch expression). It's so diffucult sometimes to choose. Most of the time I look for a more "arty" picture, if I have one, a not so familiar object or subject, but this time it was extra difficult. April was a month of experimenting for me, I just bought a new camera, and I've started to take all my pictures in RAW. I played it safe on the subjects, places that are familiar to me, to work on the results. I noticed I love working with RAW conversions and I long for more experiments, a bit less usual. We'll see.
The picture I added here was, like the one I placed for the contest, one of my best conversion results. This is surely my #2, but the other one won, beacause I loved the moment.
Like others, I get to see many great pictures I've missed, so this is also a secong chance for me.

@Bunny: I realy liked your animal series because you've managed to leave the zoo out of them if you know what I mean. The pinguin is my favorite.

Nice idea Ruud and Oscar,

Few things that have been on my mind about the contest, Firstly is it me or are people voting far to quickly on pictures and are not giving the other photos a chance. secondly are people voting for the favourite photographers rather than the most beautiful picture, and thirdly do photographs get missed the earlier they are posted?

Just curious thats all like peoples take on it.

@Bunny, it certainly is a good idea the parallel topic about the contest. I had a strong feeling people miss the chat and other things that otherwise spoil the forum of the contest.
I can imagine how you feel about your pictures. For me it is always a hard descision, every month again. I would also suggest the pinguin picture, it is the most beautiful IMO. Wish you good luck choosing one of them.

@Martin, thanks for sharing your thoughts about the second picture and the first one that is in the contest. I can imagine it was a hard choice. I like your second picture very much. Nice compo, very good sharpness and fine reflections and sky. I wish you good luck with the ducks in the contest !
I saw you bought a new camera, I'm a bit jelous
Ones you discovered RAW you don't use jpg anymore, at least that counts for me.

@Jonny, maybe you are right about your points, but it is just a game and participating is more important than winning. Have fun with the contest and enjoy the pictures from the others.
But you have a point ! Maybe Ruud and I will change something about the votings. But I don't promise

this will not be a winning picture, but it was my best rated and commented in april.
It's one of my efforts to place some "other"pictures.
I've placed my hometown Kampen more than hunderd times on the site, now I've to look for the other, the more artistic pictures.

I agree that perhaps those who post their photo's early may be disadvantaged. In most competitions voting does not take place until all the participants have placed their entries for scrutiny.

Perhaps it may be fairer to all if photo entries are allowed up until a certain cutoff date, perhaps the first three weeks of the month, and only then can voting take place, with perhaps a week to cast a vote. Then each voter will have full view of every entry before voting on their favourite.

Just a thought.

This was my other choise, but I didn't post it for the competition because I loved the one of the first nice day in April too, it gives me a happy feeling.
Geert, a tip for you, come to Texel for a holiday and you can see evry day the see.

Hi everybody!

Thanks for the beautiful pictures so far. They're really good. Also thanks for making so few mistakes (less than a handful on the first three pages!).

TGB, you don't have to vote early, or late, or hastily, or whatever. And if you make a mistake you can correct it yourself. For instance, you left your votes pretty early. It may happen that, in a day or so, a picture is submitted that you would have voted for if you had seen it earlier. Nothing is lost in that case. You just change your mind and leave three new votes that reflect your new preference. We count your last three votes.

Voting closes on the 19th. I'll vote somewhere in the second week.

We'll probably receive some five pages of entries. We now have two and a half pages. That means that about 50% of the pictures are in. We have received 17 valid votes so far. If we get as many votes as last month, then we're now at 7% of the votes that we expect.

Nothing is fixed until the last day.

Jonny, like you I don't see the point of voting when only a few pictures are in. But if someone is sorry about his choice, or made a typo while voting, he can correct it if he wants. This actually happens. (I don't think many photos are missed, by the way, and certainly not the first ones.)

@Bunny, no thanks. You have a point with the pinguin and the winter

@Joop, maybe not the winning pic but I like it.

@Dieuwertje, glad you made this choice. I like the one in the contest the most. But I like the flower also.

And Ruud~, thanks a lot for your great math. I fully agree with that.

Perhaps a silly idea but maybe it would be nice to take an interview with every months winner about his picture and let it be published in the newsletter...

@Nivad: good idea.
but: who is the interviewer?

Nivad is!

You know, we publish directly in the newsletter, but Joris mentioned that the articles should preferably be short.

I would suggest the contest organizers.
It can be rather simple with some standard questions send and answered by email. Besides it doesn't have to be a long interview, about 10 questions could be enough already.
And with a little effort that question list can be translated in the winners own language and the answers can afterwards be translated in english before publishing.
