@Phillipo: I've chosen red / black only because I think it's the most popular so it was easiest for me to find the 1firsts photos :D (I think there is more of red than the other color)
Another one I've forgotten from my collection106681

Hi nature,

Thank's, i was on my way somewhere, and the camera was in the bag on the seat next to me, i saw the train coming, with 36clicks picture in my mind i quickly turned on the camera, first i didn't expect much of it, but it came out pretty good, Miek Waling's little red car in the rain i also like very much.

great topic

there are some lovely pictures here - I'll try and do this to some of my pictures one of these days :-)
I found this picture by Paul Bonini - same idea as the red/black selective thing, very nice

@ Nature - not my picture, it's one I found on Woophy, by Paul Bonini - I really liked the composition though and thought it fitted well with this topic :-)

I will try and play with a few of my pictures one day - will be interesting to see the results.

Hi All,

I've been following this thread for a while now, and have been a bit hesitant to participate, as with the odd exceptions there, I have another opinion.

I think the use of selective colour (and probably especially the use of selective red in a grey scale image) is in most cases highly overvalued and often misused.

The problem IMO is that a localised use of colour attracts so much of the viewers' attention, that the rest of the beauty or merit of the photo is quite often overlooked and reduced to a peripheral level. The, again IMO, more important elements in a photo, such as composition, atmosphere, feel and subtlety within the whole photo tend to be overruled by the screamingly hard contrast / conflict between colour and greyscales.

This, I think, reduces the appeal of a photo tremendously, and if misused, may even ruin an otherwise perfectly good photo. It is a very good way of masking a flawed photo, as the flaws also become less visible. So the first thing I’m curious when I look at a selective colour image is: “what’s wrong with it that it needs such treatment?”

Admittedly, a selective colour image stands out, attracts attention, can be functional from a commercial point of view and even very appealing (the latter being a rare exception, I believe) but to me it is definitely not a guarantee for a good image or to enhance the "wow-factor".

Without going into specifics, I think from all the photos posted in this tread, in only one it's applied justifiably. And there's one I think is passably OK, but in most it doesn't do justice to the ground work - a full grey scale or the untouched colour version seem to be so much more attractive and appealing to me!

This of course, is highly subjective, but as the thread grew longer and longer, I couldn’t resist the urge to respond…J I hope this doesn’t prevent anyone to play around with it. Experimenting is good, trying new things is good, and it may well boost your creativity, which is even better!

I hope you can prove me wrong and produce some outstanding examples!

Cheers,

@ 36Clicks: You forgot the H in IMO :-P
@ 36Clicks: I completely agree with you.... But I guess that would have been pretty obvious from my earlier remarks here.

@rest: Don't let some critical notes stop you in your enjoying this technique.

@Andreas,

Can't really say these things and claim to be H... ;) I definitely hope this will not stop others from enjoying the technique either, Sorry, should've picked up at your remarks when I wrote my reply.
