I'm planning a trip to New York in oktober and I was wondering about the regulations on photography on the streets there.
There are clear rules in Washington (where you're not even allowed to hold a camera if you're near public transport or any of the government buildings), but I could't find anything on New York...

I took a picture of this famous 'Once Upon a Time in America' -vista from Brooklyn through a canyon of warehousebuildings of the Manhattan Bridge. I'm not sure whether they were called by a watchful neighbour or just drove through by accident but after 3 minutes a police patrol approached me and held a lecture about certain people's interest in bridges and this being not necessarily a touristic or historic one. Good thing one of them knew the Sergio Leone movie. It felt a bit like, "Sorry, we know this is tourist territory and tourists want to take pictures, but that's the way it is now".

Thanks for the story, I'll keep that in mind. I'd better memorize some movies about New York to have a series of excuses to be somewhere... :)

It's only been an issue since 9/11. Now folks worry about someone scouting out sites for another attack.

I was in Los Angeles in april this year. Didn't know about any regulations and also didn't notice anything at all. But be warned: entering the US at some airports can be an experience. Some officers are quite psycho. So just behave correct and do not attrack attention. This will also do for photographing things.

BAck in '91 I visited New York for several days.....In those days even the police would pose for you....and the beggars ask for money.;-)......but the New Yorkers don't give a thing about people taken pictures .....How it is nowadays I dont know.
