Dingo, Don't worry about the ratings mate, you have some good comments for that pic. Comments are far more special as they are personal. Anyone can rate a pic, but comments take a little more effort and they can also be very helpful regarding the pic.

hi Dingo
good idea...
I have 2 pictures rated with a 1 where I think they deserve a 3... (not more then that!)
of course there is no comment why.. ;-)
... i would like to hear your opinion about what isn't good. only if i know my mistakes i can do it better next time. thanks guys! ;-)
@ Trev j: i don't have sleppless nights just because a bad rating.. don't worry, i don't take that to seriously, but i still wanna know the reasons. i like comments like the one on the chimney picture, so i can do it better!

trev, I am not worried about the ratings. It is more to do with knowing what others see wrong with my photos that I am missing .
Bunny, I think of photos in two ways . The top one i se as an informative photo . and as such I should be able to see good detail. which it lacks a bit of. the second I see as an art photo where it is all about looking good and I think you have done well there. But what I say will not be of much help as I have only been trying to take good photos for a few months , and dont know the first thing about art or photography

Dingo, I think the problem with your image is the slanted horizon. You might think 'why bother' but many people are really picky about the rule that the horizon must be level. It's also easy to correct. I would rotate the image till it is level and resubmit it.

I received 3 x 1 for this pic. My lowest rated pic ever.
Ok it is not very beautiful but for me this picture really brings back the time I was in Japan in a country were I could not speak the language and almost nobody spoke English.
At night alone in your hotel room in an alien country...
That’s why I called this picture 'Lost in Translation

Well, Joris, at least it looks cleaner than the accommodation I had in Japan. Therefore I would at least rate it '2'. Plus one point for the jeans on the floor which add a nice touch. Plus one point because it seems correctly exposed. Minus one because it's unsharp. Makes it a clear 3 to me;-)

hi Dingo,
Sometimes it's a miracle, why others rate you with 1 and 2's.....
this got a 2....
See also nr. 65310 = 1.5, 60804 = 2, 63323 = 2, 65621 = 2, 49533 = 2 and 49678 = 2
I think it's only for downrating you and it happens everyday again. But I am still HAPPY !!

Lionel, I think your picture isn't bad but if people can nitpick they will. If you want 4s or 5s there shouldn't be anything to nitpick on. For what could be improved in this image my keywords would be "rule of thirds" (composition) and "overexposure (of the clouds and the snow)" (technique). If you don't know what the Rule of thirds is, try Google or some other search engine.

Dingo, relax a bit :) The photo is lovely, some people will like the expanse of beach and sky ~ others won't.
What Wilfred says about horizons is valuable. Most of the time a horizon should be absolutely horizontal. If it's a bit wonky, it will irritate a lot of viewers enough to spoil the picture and a rating. You should be able to put a grid over you picture in photoshop, otherwise drag it against the edge of the screen to check the horizon. It's such a simple thing and can fix or spoil a shot with any alteration to your original photography.
I also agree with the "rule of thirds" and overexposure comments from Wilfred, some of mine I thought were fine, were improved by trimming excess slghtly to 'compose' better. I often give myself extra space around a subject now, so I can fiddle around and choose which I prefer, by placing the subect in different 'thirds'
Have fun :)

@dingo: i like the 2.version better. but i can't explain why.
thanks for your opinion, i will keep it in mind and try ma best to do it better! that is what i've been looking for... i don't care much about the rating, but a low rating tells me that i did something wrong wich i wasent aware of, and i still open for all help! i never learned anything with fotographie, i just like pictures and i like to take them...
thanks

The topic starts with: ,,show us what you think is your most underrated picture" . So I think it is about ratings... You are contradicting yourself.
This topic is OK and I think it is good to ask peoples opinion about certain pictures, but why again connecting it with ratings? That is what I meant with my remark. I am so fed up with those ratings. Let us take pictures and talk about it in the way you do in this topic. A low rating doesn't tell a picture is bad; a picture that is online for sometime without getting comments may be a reason to ask what can be improved.
I agree with the remark about horizon, especially because it is easy to see. When the horizon isn't horizontal, I always notice immediately that there is something wrong in a picture I took.
As you might know, I do not like rules. Rules do not go together with creativity if one sticks to much to them. I agree with keeping this 'rule of thirds' in mind, but to me it is no 'holy' rule.
