i love portraits but i hate to be model ! human contradiction ) i think that if you RESPECT people, it's not "stolen"; and often, it's an homage ..

Good to see that this topic has interested a lot of woophy members! I've seen many excellent portraits posted here.
I still want to know what do you use to take good portraits : compact (silent shutter!) or SLR ? what lens do you use ?

I always use a compact (Canon G9) with a lens adapter. On the adapter I use a filter (UV or PO). This way people can't see it when I put the camera on and the lense is coming out.

I both agree AND disagree with Akbar ! Sometimes, a candid portrait may reveal a lot about someone while they are relaxing, unaware of the camera -
 Akbar !
On other occasions, the interaction between sitter and photographer may bring interesting, but different, results -

Hi Geoff,
I agree with you that interaction can bring great results.Your shot of the lady in Kampen proves it. But for me it's the situation on the street (or in a train) that matters most and when there's interaction with the photographer the situation changes.

This candid I made while we were having a drink on the terrace near the bridge. It would have been totally different when there had been interaction.

I took this 1 of a lady in miami & got in trouble, from my wife, who clearly doesn't understand we (photographers) have a right to do as we please.

I do not do a lot of portraits as I have never been very comfortable making pictures of people. Of the portraits I have done some have been with permission and some without.
The one I like best is of an Argentine gaucho at the end of a tourist visit to an estancia. The gauchos were lined up on their horses to bid farewell to the visitors, so consent for pictures was certainly implied. This photo is cropped from the original (333807).

Another face with character, also cropped. He was driving a buggy and I shot with a telephoto lens. No consent, although he may have seen me making pictures of him.

On this one I gave a motion with my camera and raised my eyebrows getting a brief nod in return.

Taken through a bus window.

Telephoto lens, no consent.

These kids were eager to have their pictures taken and then they looked at them on the lcd on the camera. They would pose stiffly, but I got this as they relaxed when they heard the shutter from the first picture.

When you shoot people to document the world around you, you will also be confronted with the bad and sad sides of life.
