Hi everybody !
I'm not used to take portrait pictures, so it's kinda new for me, that's why I need your experience. Maybe I'm going to sound a little naif, but... When you want to take pictures of people you don't know, like on the street, in an airport, in a restaurnt, etc... Do you ask for permission ? Or just take the picture while the person is not looking ? (papparazzi like )
I' don't want to upset someone, or look like a pervert...
thank you !

ZeeZOo Hi. You've raised an interesting topic, which recurs from time to time in Woophy Forums. As I understand it, in Europe, you may photograph people in public places ( on the street, etc. ) without first asking their permission. When doing so, it is only good manners to ensure that your picture does not demean, or humiliate, the subject in any way. This is my approach, at least : to date, I have encountered no problems. Quite often, when folk realise that I've taken their picture, it has led to ( friendly ) contact with them. The most recent example is the lady I photographed in Kampen [ picture id. 615006 ].
Hope you find this helpful : I'm sure that other members will also wish to add their opinions.
Regards
Geoff. ( Geoffrey McElwaine )

Who knows, maybe you look like a pervert anyway?
Seriously though, it would depend on the circumstance. I mean sometimes it is not possible to ask permission e.g. if you were taking a shot from a moving vehicle, or photographing a crowd of people. And sometimes if you take a photo don't ask permission you will at least look rude, may incur a violent reaction and possibly end up getting arrested...
But then if you do ask permission, you may not get the natural shot you originally saw.
And I am not sure if it is law, but if you were planning on publishing your photo on the internet, almost certainly you should get the permission of the subject.

I have already taken pics of people who didn't actually see me taking them. It's not very diffiicult to use the zoom and do it. I also took pics of dogs and was afraid they would jump over me, but this hasn't happened. I remember in Jerusalem I had to be very careful to take pics of curious people I saw because they were always looking at you suspiciously. In Portugal you can ask people for permission and they'll say yes or no. I've taken lots of pics at Foz do Douro where people sit for a drink and nobody cared because it's aplace where everybody takes pics of the sea, the esplanades and themselves.
That's my experience.

I have never asked somebody to take him a picture and I haven't got any problems neither. Moreover I don´t even know if there is a law in my country against that.
I would like to make clear that if somebody asks me to erase a picture of him I would erase it from my camera or Woophy because I consider that people has the right to ask for that.

recently I was ask to delete few pictures of childrens I shoot where I work, according with the law in Japan you cannot even post your birthday party pics on internet without getting permition of all the people that appears in the picture. Still I got 2 portraits one from a homeless that I did not ask permition and some woophy members dissagree with that action, and other one from a girl... I did not ask permition but I show my camera to her and gave a smile to see her reaction, she smile back so I took it.

perhaps it is so, but I've got several pictures made with permission and sometimes they did ask to 'shoot' them.....
some examples;

My experience is that most of the people don't mind photographing them, if you make a asking movement with your camera, they almost all agree.......
and I've got also a lot of pictures that were made with out permission, but when I later asked or told the people I shot them, most of them didn't mind.
kind regards ruud

So we are all kind of peeping Toms and some of us occasionally feel ashamed but mostly proud, me too!
