I am still in doubt about buying a new camera. I do not know whether to buy a new digital camera or buy a classical one, but I think I will choose the first (because printing becomes to costy and when I send in my analog pictures to be printed they often are 'digitalized', {unless you go to a [more expensive] photography shop}, so the difference in quality won't be big).
As you might know, I like landscape and nature photography. The digital camera I now have is an old 'shoot-and-go' thing one can take pictures with, but not more than that. And I want more! So, my question is: what do you think will be a good camera for me?
I would like to use it mainly for nature photography; landscapes as well as close ups and moving objects. I would like a possibility of easily changing several settings with my own hands, without going through all kinds of menus (so maybe a bit classical-like camera). So please tell me your experiences and what you consider best for me.

hi roderick
a digital slr (single refelx camera) might be what you are looking for. unfortunatley prices are relatively high. i have been out with my minolta analogue slr for ages and it was hard for me to decide to go digital. yet a scanner which would allow me to scan the negatives in a quality which would satisfy me is about the same price as a dslr, so i went for a minolta d7d. of course any other producer (canon, nikon,...) is as well, but since i had an analogue minolta slr before, i was able to use the old lenses on the new camera. and well: i am happy now with my camera. i can set everything manually or put it on program, whichever suits me.
if you already have an analogue slr, maybe it would be worth asking, if the producer has a digital slr and the old lenses are compatible with the new camera.
cheers
matz

Hi Roderick,

A girlfriend of mine bought a Canon EOS 350D. I don't know the price exactly but it wasn't more than 1.000 euro (watch out : lenses no incl.). I think she bought it at the Makro.

PS : I've some analogue pictures of "a climbing place" in the North of france. The village is Monthermé (not far from the belgian border and aprox 300 km. from utrecht), i will post the pics when i found them

Nonkel & Roderick

a Eos350D kost aboaut €700 for the body
for a €250...400 you can buy a nice walk around lens
some extra batteries

for around €1000 you can have a nice starterset.

for prices look at the tweakers.net pricewatch (in dutch)

but i dont know if this is wat you are looking for, give us some more details like budget and wishlist.

Hey Roderick,

It is a hard decision. If you don't want to spend too much money you should go for the compact (sony W15/17 or Canon Ixus are great), but I have to say a SLR is much more fun taking pictures.

SLR cameras give you more control over the photo, compact cameras are more difficult to use on manual settings but they are much easier to carry around. A good photographer should be able to take great photos with both :)

I can tell you my experience with the Eos 350D. It takes beautiful pictures, easy to use on automatic as wel as manual, and very fast in startup and image writing, enough pixels for a blowup. I would advise you to buy just a body and a lens that you like instead if the kitlens.

Thank you very much Matthias, nonkel duvel, Conrad and Erik for sharing your experiences. I think I will go for the digi SLR, for the reason Erik mentioned above. EOS 350D might be a good option to me, because of the price-quality ratio.

dingo. It's not the digital SLR that matters there the most, It's the lens. :)
Roderick there's also the Nikon D50 :)
I Use a nikon D70 and I'm happy with it. costs not too much either nowadays.

Hi Riderick, have a think about just what you want from your new camera and don't be swept away looking for the "newest" model. As new models are being released, the previous models may be on sale for a better price = great camera, great price! I was using an HP850 which was great, it had good zoom (my surfer shot was WAY out there) and close ups were good too. But I found myself like you, wanting something a bit more. On holiday recently there was a Canon SLR EOS 300D, which has a newer model available now so it was being sold at half it's original price! No need to translate NZ$ to Euros to know that was a bargain! Have a look at a veriety of lenses and shop around :) happy shooting and good luck with your papers.

Well... I actually like to write papers. In those papers I can put some of my inspiration. For example, I recently wrote a paper about the economic effects of referendums and what the Netherlands can learn from the Swiss situation. That was very interesting and nice to deal with, although it takes a lot of time. I hate written exams, because that is just reproducing facts. And I like papers for the creativity one needs for it and the nice way of discovering things myself and activeliy thinking about it...

@ ET Images: Thanks for your advice!! I will keep saving money for a new camera and when I have enough, I will take your advice and the good advices of others into consideration. I already walk into shops every now and then to see if there are models that meet my needs and sell at lower prices than the newest models.

@nonkel: Thanks for your nice words. I handed in the last one this afternoon and the deadlines of the others were last week. I made it all and I'm satisfied with the results; hope the profs can also appreciate my work... But hey, we're talking a bit off-topic ;)

@Erik: what's wrong with the kitlens? Isn't it better to start with an "overall"-lens instead of a more specialised one?

Has anyone any experience with the olympus E500?

@Big_Apple: The kitlens is not that bad, but to me the lens doesn't feel very solid and it is not so easy to use in manual focus.
Canon has enough lensen for a good price which are more solid and have a better range than the kitlens. But I have to say that the price difference between a body and the kit set is very small. So if you don't want to buy other lensen, the kitlens could be a good start.

Someone who has experience with the Olympus E-300?
That one is a bit older than for example Canon EOS 350D and therefore much cheaper... And I think it might be good enough for me.

I'm considering buying this Olympus E300, because I saw a shop downtown selling it for only 500 euros. I think that is quite cheap for a camera with the quality of this one; anyone who disagrees and says 'no! you'd better not buy that one' ?

Have you read the review on ?
Is that 500€ with or without lenses?
If I look on the web, then you get 2 lenses for 470€ in the E-500 kit. So the body is 350€. That's a bargain as well!

Thanks Big_Apple for your reaction. I read that review (and a number of other reviews).
The 500 euro is with the kit lens (14-55).
The cheapest I found on the internet (www.tweakers.net/pricewatch --> in Dutch) is 490 euros (incl. verzendkosten). The 2nd cheapest is 560. So I think 500 in the shop downtown is reasonable.
But does anyone disagree with me if I say the Olympus E300 is not that much worse than for example Canon EOS 350D to pay a 250 euros more for the latter?
