I'm off to get a new digital camera.
I guess it will be a D40x, I like the Leica a lot, but I realy want a SLR and I've had loads of Nikon film cameras. I don't particularly wan't auto focus but it is handy so I'll get the kit.
If anyone has any advise please feel free to give it
And You all have a Very Mery Christmas.
Cheers

Perhaps get a Nikon D80 - I hear that the D40 and D40x have different sized lenses which would make it a pain if you want to upgrade your body later. Its much like Canon and the EF-S lenses.
I bought a Canon 40D recently, and I think you can get the film style focusing screens as an add on to mine - check if that possible with Nikon, because you get little selectable squares placed over the screen for autofocus points, but its a pain to manually focus.
Merry Xmas to you as well, and hope you make a good choice!

I think the D80 and D40x use the same Nikkor-mount lenses, but the D40x hasn't got an on-board focus motor. (Correct me if my memory is wrong here) So if you want to have auto-focus on a D40x, only the last generation lenses with built-in motor will focus automatically. Especially check this with third-party lenses which BTW may be a better option than the Nikon set)
The D40x, being a bit newer, has a slight advantage in image quality (not megapixel count but image detail in what comes out in the end)

Zerega is right. The D40 only autofocusses with lenses that have a focus motor in the lens (which is rare and costly). Overall test are good but I would advise to buy a D80x of Nikon. Cost a bit more but you have a greater choice of lenses of third parties because this camera has the focus motor built into the camera body. I personally use a Coolpix 8800. (fixed 10x zoom lens). Good camera but the ISO range is too short. I am going to buy a new one and I think I go for the D80x.

Well I got a Panisonic DMC-FZ18. After trying a D40x and D80 I wasn't really impressed with either, unless I got thousands of pounds worth of lenses, and a 4x4 to cart it all around in. The D40 with the kit lens was better made than the Cannon, but still wasn't up to much.
I liked the D300 but it was well out of my budget.
It's just the first day, but so far I love it. For £275 from Jessops it's pretty impressive.
So now I'm going into the heart of Darkest London to shoot some stuff, I may be gone some time.
Cheers

After a few days, I still think I will get a serious SLR. But the Panisonic will certainly take most pics I'll want to do. And it is a joy to use, but pretty useless as a manual camera.

I have a D80 and I'm very very happy with it. I also have an old F3 and standard... Nikon lenses fit. Always. The difference between the D40 (6MP) and the D40x (10.2MP) and the D80 (10.2MP) is the electronics. The D40x / D80 / D200 uses the same optics. That's it
