Hi people!

I'm new here and I have one important question (for me, of course :))!
It bothers me so long...cus I don't have anyone good in photography to ask about it...

So, how can I make a picture where object in the middle is sharp, but background comes blure??
Like on this picture:

Please, tell me everything...what to do with focus, exposure, ISO...etc. Anythign which is relevant.
I'm not so good in terminology, so please be prcise as much as you can :)

Tnx in advance!!

Hello Halyl,

In general speaking is this what is call the Depth Of Field, or shortwise DOF. Background blurred and foreground sharp.
This effect is mostly created when you use a small F-number, the F-number you can find most of the time on the lens and variates from F1,5 ( small number, great lensopning) to F33 ( big number, small lensopening).

But perhaps it is easier to look overhere ,Depth Of Field ,hope you find it usefull, and there are several websites that are usefull for photographers....use the term photography in google and you will find a lot of websites.

kind regards de stilte/ ruud

Best is to do it with DOF like de Stilte explains. You can also do it (sometimes) with postprocessing in Photoshop using one of the blur tools. Below is an example where I have blurred the background with Phoshop.

Tnx!
I hope I will figure it out :)

I assumed that focus is the main thing...but I couldn't realize which F number for the particular distance.
And I have Canon A520, so the smallest F is 2.6 and I made quite qood pics with macro mode...but when it comes on "manual"...simply I can't do it right :)

Sometimes you can use the "portrait" option.

Nice topic.
I have uploaded 2 pictures that illustrate my way of working a background.
This one is the original:

This one is my final version with blurred background:

As you can see, there was a Photoshop work: I have made the blur in a separate layer and then erased what I wanted to be sharp. Sometimes that´s all we can do. Of course playing with f-stop can also do the work. But when we cannot do that...PS can do it for us...
Really nice topic
Cheers
