Hi everyone,
Before heading for a couple of weeks of (woophyless) Holliday.. I'd like to post this topic about a technique you see a lot by various photographers.. think of the obvious wedding photographer.
It seems that many people like it and for the digital users it's fairly easy to achieve as well.
It's the colored item or a spot in a black and white surrounding.
The method is easy, take a colored photo, open it in e.g. photoshop, duplicate it to a different layer. Convert one layer to black and white. Crop the colored layer around the subject you want to keep colored. (Selecting the object in the colored layer is more easy than the b&w one). Move the colored layer on top and voila the result is there.. With more colored spot's, use more layers.
This is one of the many way's.
What do you think about these kind of photo's?
- just a cheasy WOW-effect or a nice option and break in the photofolio..
Here are two of mine and a couple of others I found...

I have to admit these pictures are very nice and well done.
But this effect, as of lot of direct manipulations of pictures (strong saturation, strong clarification, artistic blur, etc) is really not my cup of tea. Yes, It seems to me an artifical and a bit crude effect. I prefer to see little details put in evidence with more complex effects as the framing, the focus, the choice of good background for contrast, the motion etc...
Nevertheless, the use of this method doesn't mind me, exept when it is used too systematically.
(Red is often used for this effect and I remind previous forums opened at this subject)

I think it is an effect that can either be really good looking on a photo or else really bad looking. I personally think that it is very nice, but again it depends on where it is used and what it is used for. It obviously manipulates the picture in a heavy way making it look fake in some way, but, if the intention is just to create a nice picture than it can bring to some amazing results.
Anyhow, I like the pics you have posted and enjoy your holiday :))

Nice topic Corneel !
I think is depends on taste either you like it or you don't.
I think it can look good or bad as Devish said. Some pics are not that good at their original way and some improved by giving this effect.
And for me it is a lot of fun to do this with a picture., and when the result is beautiful and others like them I'm very happy with it.
Some other creations of me:

I believe that it can be over done but it can also bring an ordinary/nothing special photo back to life.
This photo below was taken on a cloudy day but the sun was shining on the gull. I liked the composition of the original photo but the background was killing the overall image so I desaturated it.
This photo was just a playful eperiment.

Amazingly enough Corneel brough up a topic that has interested me for a while now!
so much so, that from an early look into this technique, I recently filled a whole portfolio with these images.
I believe that what Aline is saying is partially true, and often extra manipulation is not a good thing. However, I came to the conclusion that many of the things we used to do in a darkroom (and I have learnt lots working in darkrooms) we now do on photoshop, and it is not an artistic crime to ammeliorate your picture with a simple post production process.
With this, I perfectly understand that some of these pics have more taste, some less.
I have made different ones, from a simple portrait where the colour is only and add-on and doesn't change the substance of the picture;
To images where the colour is the true essence of it. This happens mainly when I want to highlight a concept in a less traditional way than depth of field . I also think that some colours are absolutely amazing if compared to the greyness of the scene behind them. In the end, this is what our eyes do when we shoot a picture; look at the subject and avoid concentrating on anything else!
Thanks to Corneel for bringing up such a nice topic!
Hugs to all,
Nathan

Nice idea Corneel and thanx for the invitation.......sometimes such photo effects are very effective especially when the photographer intends on focussing on the power of just a single colour.
I use a software to convert the pic. into b/w using channel mixer and the software brush itself for reviviing a portion of the converted pic. into the original colours. The software is called Photobrush by Mediachance.
Here are 2 samples from my portfolio.
Best regards to all.

Instead of cropping, you can also use a layer mask to show/hide certain parts of a layer, which gives you a bit more flexibility (I guess)
