On my daily stroll on the internet I encountered the next link from canon.
Although I am not a canon user the principles of lensmaking will be the same for every lens/camera manufacturer.....and now I know really why those lenses are sometimes so expensive.

Thank u de stilte for this very educational and informative link.......it makes us more appreciative of the processes it takes in making our camera lenses.
Equally important, it shows us the difficulty of cleaning camera lenses especially when there is fungus growth in-between lenses. Fungus growth can affect the optical and focusing quality of the lenses as well as decolorising the surface colour coating and it takes specialists to disassemble the lenses for a thorough cleanup.....very costly and time consuming.
In Tropical countries, where there is high rainfall and high humidity, fungus growth is a silent and constant problem.
