hello all :)
Just polling you all on what personal aspects do you judge photography on most in determining a good photo. eg: light, shape, composition- which do you take more in to account and look for most?
Comments much appreciated

Ykes! That's a really tough question, since I personally think that I view photos as ART, and therefore, it is a subjective evaluation, rather than objective. Personally, I will look at a photo, and first decide if it apeals/attracts me. (Although I must admit that even repulsive photos, I have viewed and rated, because they deserved both & a comment.)

Then I will zoom in, and check it more closely to try to evaluate it's values such as subject(s), colours, focus, and composition. Then, and perhaps even before all of that, I might notice a quirk that draws me in. Maybe some unexpected humour, or an attitude that the photog captures with her/his skill, or one of their subject happens to display. I could go on and on ...

I dunno what you're looking for, goog, but the answers won't be simple, when you get responses from any Woophy's that are being honest.

I honestly think that if any of us had the answer to your question ... Then we would all be posting "good photos". (Just in my own opinion! ;-)

I tend to agree with Zazi. It's difficult to describe your own criteria. A photo appeals to you or not. But if - in retrospect - I analyse the qualities of the photos that appeal to me I think it is mainly the composition and special light falls that make me happy. But maybe I am biased because I am a landscape photographer.

I agree as well, I don't really know what I like of a pic, technically. It is just something particular and personal that fascinates me nad makes me like the pic. It is very subjective for everyone in my opinion.

It's a complicated matter. The first impression counts. Therefore I cannot judge most of my own pictures because I've seen them too much. The first impression tells me in which degree I like a picture. After that I start to examine why exactly I like it. And most of the time that's because of certain lines, patterns, colours, perspective, or simply because of the subject.

Besides from what is in the image, I like to pay attention to see (and achieve) what is not in the image. Disturbing items can ruin a photo. Many people don't realize that aspect.
It's one of the thing while judging my photo's, as simplicity is what I strive for.

Simplicity, Rythm, Originality, Humour, Beauty, Meaning, Light, Emotion, Pattern, Shock, Balance, Tension, Surprise, to name a few things...

Most of these things are very subjective and I cannot describe them any better without seeing a picture that has the quality that I like. In my own work I sometimes see it only a long time after I have taken the picture. If you look at my website you may notice my 'style.'

Mostly the first impression does it..........after that I start thinking about it 'why' i like a picture and that could be several reasons, as written above by Ruud.

Is " impact " too simplistic ? I.e. Does the image " jump off the screen at me ? " Ruud has listed some components which may make for a great picture, but if it doesn't " touch " me ( and I won't attempt to define that ! ), none of them count for anything.

@geoffrey: not too simplistic at all. i used to look at pictures from a lot of artistic and technical angles but have stopped doing that most of the times. when a picture reaches out for me and really grabs me - that's it then. instant surrender.
only time i go more into depth is, when i kind of like a picture but something is bothering me. then i try to find out what it is.

Ooo! I really like that discription that matz just used > "When a picture reaches out for me and really grabs me-that's it then, instant surrender."

Very well put, matz!

I also like your last sentance, about going into more depth, "when I kind of like a picture...."

I hope you also take the time to give advice & guidance to those photos!? That's what I hope for on my photos ... Advice and guidance. (In a nice and supporting manner, eh? ;-)

@zazi: well, i usually share my thoughts whenever i find the time. as a rule i do not rate without leaving some kind of comment. but since i try to do that, i rate and comment a lot less pictures than i would like to.

Hey Brother's and Sisters on Woophy, and friends through the lense ...

I dunno much, but I have learned so very much through my teachers and friends on Woophy.

I think that "goog2008", had a legit question that most of us were thinking about, and a bit too afraid to ask. I'm guessing that it sounded better from a young one. Rather than any of us that have been on Woophy for much longer? Just a thought.
