I have a Sony Alpha 100, with a lens, a Sigma 18-125.
I think about another lens for pictures of nature (birds mainly) and street life.
With Sony, I can only choose between Tamron, Sigma and Sony. And my budget is not sooo important.
So I think about a SIGMA 70-300mm F4-5,6 DG APO Macro.
Does someone here is using the same ? or able to giving me advise ?

Aline, if it is possible look also at 'old' Konica Minolta lenses. It broadens your view a lot. The Sony Alpha is based on the Konica Minolta D7. Sony has bought Konica Minolta.

perhaps you have already visit
Sony France but it is never wrong to give the link ......again?..;-)

Hi Aline, I use the 75-300mm f4.5-5.6mm Sony lens. As far as I know it is the old Minolta lens which I believe gives a focal length of 450mm (35mm equiv.)

Hi Aline, I use also a Sony Alpha 100, and I am satisfied with it. I have 2 lenses, a small one 3.5-5.6/18-70 and a big one 4.5-5.6/75-300.
My problem is I have no knowledge enough to make really good pict. with this camera, but the camera is 100% !!!!

Thank you all.
Aiso, are you using the 2 Sony lens often sold "packaging" with the Alpha 100, or lens from another mark ?

Hi Aline,
In the local store I have bought a "kit ", that is a combination of the Sony Alpha 100 with these two Sony lenses. I did not go to a big store in a big city because I need so much help. I use this camera since 1-11-2006.

Hi everybody,
I am a new member and it's my first discussion in a forum.
Aline, I bought a Sony Alpha 100 in december because I had a Minolta before and I wanted to use my old lenses : a 50 mm and a 135 mm but also the Sigma 70-300 APO. I think it works well (I'm not a pro, so...) and if you have troubles, Sigma seems to be correct with the customers.

Hi Aline,

when I got my second lense for my canon (90-300) I made up my mind before
going to the store. I was going to buy a Tamron.
But the salesman convinced me of trying it out for a couple of minutes in the store
before buying it.
What I found was that the sensitivity to light of the actual lenses (sigma, tamron and cannon) were quite equivalent.
But playing around with it, zooming a lot, I found out that the canon one was easier to manipulate, but a little heavier.
so my advice: try them before you buy them! is it more important to you that it is small and light or solid and sturdy? fast and easy to use or more accurate?
all questions that you can only answer after trying them out.

Kind Regards,
W.Z.

Thank you all for your advises !

@ W., the saleman of my shop told me the same as you : the Canon and Sigma lens are heavier than Tamron and Sony's one, and Sigma's lens are more difficult to adjust, due to the material used (more metal).

As nobody give negative advise, I think I will just stay on my first choice, the SIGMA 70-300 APO...
Alas I can't try it before the purchase.. I can only try the Sony's lens, so no possible comparative test. The shop has to order the Sigma for me. La Rochelle is a small town :-)
