Hey - I'm new to Woophy,
is the use of Photoshop and similar programs taboo when it comes to photography like this?
Thanks,
ENBr

Hi ENBr4x4 (what a nickname, who invents such a thing !!!)
Firstly: Welcome to Woophy
There are no rules on Woophy about the use of PS and similar editing programmes. Some members like it and others don't. There has been a discussion in the past (see link) which might be interesting for you to read through.

Speeking personally: there is no photo in my portfolio that has not gone through PS for minor (or major) adaptations. In principle I can tweak my camera to my taste but I prefer to do that off-line in PS. And sometimes I use PS to make 100% abstract creations.
Greetings
Pansa

Thanks for you post :)
ENBr is short for Evanickelbridger - a mash of some of my favourite bands!
Thanks for your opinion - I wondered if it would play against me - I usually modify mine slightly (and hopefully tastefully), and give them borders etc.
Cheers!

I have no problem with photoshopping photos as long as it doesn't look too obvious. Most of my photos have had their noise levels reduced as I only have a relatively cheap bridge camera, and the histogram normalised as I like my photos quite contrasty compared to originals. Then of course there is the more obvious tweaking such as straightening horizons or rubbing out of tourists' heads.

hello,
100% of my pictures have been treated through photoshop or any software I think useful to henhance the quality of the pic. I don't have any taboo on that topic.
I don't think that it is different from what was done in a chemical lab

I have no problem with Photoshopping or any other other software, I even think a lot of the pic's would be a lot better with a some work. A little more contrast and saturation does miracles to most digital pic's. Straightening and cropping are very usefull too.
Even advanced photo editing work can be great, I'm sorry that I'm not able to do so.

I think that the art of taking digital photo is ..
having a great subject and altering the image in a way that it's not too obvious in photoshop..
I lot of my picture where alter inphotoshop just to give a better contrast and better colors..
I am quite a new "photographer" and I find that photoshop gives my photo some pezaz!

some traitional photographers may consider photoshop and photo manipulation cheating and making it easy to be talented, but it really depends on what angle you're looking at it from.
True, if you're entering a photo contest it wouldn't be good to edit things.
But these days as digital photography and computer become more widespread, photography and graphic design are becoming two seperate genre's of art. Photography is making the best of an image in the real world, while graphic design is playing with the image of reality and contorting it into a different vision.
I'd also say that though taking a good photo without manipulation takes talent, so does photoshopping a picture so that it's really striking. If you can do both, you've really got it made.
Both photography and graphic design are forms of visual art, so they should both be considered equal on here. I agree with pansa when they say it depends on the user. Some people like photo manipulation and what fantasies can come out of that, while others want to stay rooted to our world the way it is and capture the best of that.
Atleast that's my point of view on the matter ;-]
