Hi everybody!

i just desided to change my camera. I used till know Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-V1.
But i wanna switch to a DSLR Camera.
After reading so many topics and tests on other websides, i wanna ask you what is your expirience with the Canon EOS 350D?
Or do you have something better for more or less (less is better...) the same price? For me its important that i can focus manually.( Couldn't firured out if it is possible with that Canon)

Greetings
..and thanks ;-)
Karin

Hi karin,

Recently i switched from a nikon coolpix 7900 to an EOS350D. It's possible to focus manually. On the lenses i have, there is a switch you can use to switch from manual to autofocus and vice versa.

Until now i'm very satisfied with the EOS 350D, the quality of the pictures is much better than my old coolpix. I found i rather easy to use the manual settings. But i have to get used to that still a little. There are still enough moment when i forget to set the shutter speed right or the aperature.

But i hope practice will make perfect (or at least improve a bit).

Hi Bunny,

I also take my pictures with the 350D.

I changed one year ago from Ixus to EOS and it worth it.
I think the price/performance ratio is absolutly ok.

Nearly all my picture on Woophy are taken with the Kit-lense and I'm very satisfied with the quality concerning my requirements.

This camera has a lot of functions, which are easy to handle - but I didn't use them all so
far.

I'm sure you would have a lot of fun with the EOS! ;)

Bunny,

last october i've changed from an a95 to EOS350 and no regrets so far. The kit lense is good enough to find out what you want. in december i've bought a EF28-135 3.5-5.2 IS a nice walk around objective.

I'm now looking for a good wide angle lens but i can't figure out what to buy. it's so expensive....and i'm only buying full frame lenses so it's even harder to find a good one.

Manual settings and focus is a nice feature but needs a lot of practice!!!

if you have any questions....don't be shy....

Just try it out in a shop before you buy it. You have to like the ergonomic 'feel' of the camera. Specific for the 350D (American name Rebel XT) is that many people don't like its small size and the 'plastic' feel of the body. For instance compare it with a Nikon D50, which is also made of plastic but which is heavier and more rugged - some people prefer that, others don't want to carry around a heavier camera. Don't let the number of megapixels be the main buying criterion. The lens is also important - for the 350D, the 18-55mm kit lens may not be the best option: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/canon_1855_3556/index.htm

thank you both for the advices!
I accually don't want a heavy camera, so this is a piont for the canon. the number of the mp i think its not necessery to have more then 6-7 (after what i read about) about the lens, i found that some shops (in the internet) are selling it with a 55-200.for not much more money... so i will have this offer in my mind. my problem is just that the fotoshops around here, don't have the camera in there sortiment, and they are very expensive here, if they are ordering it i have to buy it too. so i have to wait untill i go once in a bigger city to try it out. (nice area here, but also end of the worl!)

thanks again guys

Trying out really is important. It's not only about weight, it's also about size and how the camera fits into your hands. The 350D didn't really fit well into my hands but that's personal. You should also check out the offerings of Pentax and Olympus, (and Minolta if there are stilll some left-overs!) who are producing smaller cameras than Nikon, but perhaps also better fitting into someone's hands than the low-end Canon camera.

Hi Bunny,

The 55-200 doesn't sound like a Canon lens, and you may end up getting a very cheap lens. I was initially going to buy the 350D, but bought the 20D instead only because the 350D doesn't shoot in RAW format.

ConradM, I have the 17-40 f4 L and am extremely happy with it. Like you, I'm only buying full ftame lenses since I'm sure that in 1-2 years all the sensors will be full frame. This lens is the least expensive of the wide zooms, and still translates to 28mm-64mm on the 350D.

@vanhephoto: you said:'because the 350D doesn't shoot in RAW format I never used it but the 350 can shoot RAW.

I agree with the fact of the Full frame will be standard soon so that's why i don't buy EF-S but only EF (full frame) And Yes unfortunately Full Frame Wide angle lenses are rare and expensive but the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM (ΓΈ77mm) is the efforteble alternative.

@bunny: yes there is a lot Arguing going on about the ergonomics, so try before you buy !!!

@vahephoto: why do you think full-frame will be the standard in a few years? I don't think so.

@ConradM Thanks for the correction! I didn't realize the 350D can shoot RAW.

@Wilfred: I think so, Canon already has the 5D and 1D with full-size sensors, and the 5D sells for $3000. In a couple of years, you'll at least have the successor of the 30D with a full size sensor, and I think Nikon and others will try very hard to catch up.

@vahephoto, I don't see the real advantage of full-frame. Yes, a 24mm lens is a real wide-angle at FF, but for a 1.5 crop factor, a 16mm lens has the same effect and it's not really more difficult to design or manufacture, because the sensor area it has to cover can be smaller. At the tele end, smaller sensors are only at an advantage.
The extra noise starts to kick in when the sensor is getting much smaller than APS size, but that may change as well in the future.

@wilfred: Larger sensor size means more light, that's the big advantage, No lense can beat that.

and yes i agree production of APS-C camera's and lenses fot it will always stay cheaper, but Full frame will be availeble for acceptable prices soon.
