The Detroit Publishing Company was an American photographic publishing firm best known for its large assortment of photochrom color postcards.

The company was founded as the Detroit Photographic Company in the 1890s. You can read the rest of the story by clicking HERE and have a look at the official webpage of the American Memory Library of Congress dedicated to the Detroit Publishing Company HERE

One of best pictures that company edited was THIS ONE back in 1900. It is a portrait of Thisbe, a mythological woman from Babylon who stabbed herself to death after seeing her beloved Pyramus dead WIKI.

110 years after the edition of that picture, Woophy is proud to announce that Detroit Publishing Company reappears with the name of sueallen like a phoenix.

Man, I love this site!

sueallen portfolio was intriguing me. Thanks for your research about this so beautiful portrait.

Abílio, thank you for all the research you did about this topic, I have learn't a lot of this old history about photographing.

@ Dieuwertje: the question is not about the quality of my research or about the history of Photography. It is about posting a picture from someone else pretending that it is our picture.

Would you pick a Henri Cartier-Bresson's picture from the web and upload it on Woophy as being yours? I don't think you would.

SueAllen, the oldest photographer of the world?

exactly as Christian, i was surprised by the "yoyo quality" of this portfolio ...
thanks, Abilio, for sharing your research
and, cherry on the cake, notice this about him/herself : "we are now venturing into some serious photography" oh!!

Hi Abílio,

This reminds me of the portfolio of h-a-m-e-d, a fine collection of internet wallpapers. Though I believe he posted one picture that is actually by himself. This is it:

Most of the pictures in his portfolio come from wallpaper or other sites, like this one:

you'll find it about one-third down in this list of wallapers on sfw.org.ua

For anyone who doesn't know yet: In TinEye (click here to visit) you can paste the URL of the enlarged version of any picture on Woophy, and find its duplicates on the internet.

Sometimes you'll discover that a member is a member of more than one site. Sometimes a picture has been stolen from a woophy member, and sometimes a woophy member has posted a picture that he found on the internet.

In the latter case, there is some satisfaction in discovering who the real photographer is. You can then give him credit in the comments:

by Mike Fretto.

Using the Abuse Button to report the practice of posting "borrowed material" has little to no effect these days, at least to my experience.

But there's Woophy for you!

@ Abílio: I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this pic in sueallen's gallery! In how many books of the photography history I came across it! I was ready to push the abuse button but... I feel tired...
@ Ruud~: really TinEye was previously referred here, at the Woophy Forum, but it's well done you brought it back to knowledge of some who hadn't yet known about its functions!
As for the rest... no words!

Miquel don't make it even harder on me. I feel stupid enough. I commented on this picture. Must say it was new to me

# Posted: 2 Sep 10 23:37

Martin, it's not you that must feel stupid, for not knowing the picture, but someone who ... "knows" it!

Best wishes for your new schoolyear (not on the mood for it, yet).

I don't agree with the sometimes sarcastic tone and the use of harsh words like ‘honest’ and ‘cheater’ when somebody posts a (famous) photo which is not their own.

If you suspect copyright violation you can always send the Woophy staff an email and we (try to) deal with it as soon as possible.

Especially with new members it may very well be the case that they don’t know the ‘mores’ (which means written and unwritten rules) of the site.

If any of the photos from sueallens portfolio deservers attention in the forum it is this one.

If you read what she writes about herself you see that she (they) is in fact quite serious about photography. You might like or dislike her photos put please be nice to new members.

What sueallen wrote about herself.

have been in the field for approximately 20 yrs. We are now venturing into some serious photography, showing the beauty in a deeply scarred burn survivor, a series we hope to display in an open gallery. We are also doing some different stuff, and hope that the daring part of it will show the beauty of I am. We are Sueallen Photography Unique & Photocentric and hope to share with you our thoughts and welcome yours thank you for the warm welcome!

(Also please Ruud, understand that when it is about backgrounds used in windows in small portfolios from members from countries where it is not very common to have internet connections or digital cameras we are not acting that swift, some (all) people deserve a second change to prove their intentions before they are put on the pillory (schandpaal))
