Doel. This village has to disappear for the expansion of the “Antwerp Port”. The authorities declaired the village officially as unlivable. But this isn’t true, it’s a trick to dispossess the habitants in an easy way. Most of the people left their houses but some stubborns are staying. Squatters took some empty houses and are helping the remaining habitants with the protest against the autorities. Walking through the village gives you a special feeling, it’s a double feeling, difficult to describe. I did it with my wife, son (5 y.), daughter (10 y.) and a friend’s son (11 y.). You can’t believe that this village will be destroied completely on 31/08/09. 31/08/09 is the limit…
 The church and a lorry...
 No words...
A message to the authorities, "Peeterske, stop this village-murder... Tear down your own house (undecided policy)"
 The village : Doel
 A picknick in the village...
Antwerp Port. David against Goliath, Doel against the authorities
 Stairway to heaven... ?
Is this war ? No, Belgium 2008...
My 5 y.o. son doesn't understand this. He asks me why. I can't give him an answer...
 Even the cars are left...
 This was a garage...
The nuclear central and the mill. Who will stay ?
Let it be clear : Doel blijft, Doel stays !
Another message : Stop de waanzin, Doel blijft (Stop the madness, Doel stays)
Will be continued !

Monday, 9 august 2008, latest news...
The riot police entered the village this morning, so the demolishing of some houses could go on. The squatters and the habitants were surprised by this show of strenght and had no chance to protest. 2 people are arrested...
Some houses on this picture belong to the past... demolished this morning
 My children watching the news
let the picture speak... (oproerpolitie tegen acties in doel = riot police against actions in Doel)

Here near Amsterdam we had/have the same situation with Ruigoord, since 1968 it is still waiting for the politicians to make decisions and it is an artistic freeport, see http://www.leoplatvoet.nl/de_groei_van_ruigoord .htm

This is sad like joopvandijk said "the power of money". We have a problem here to in my part of Ireland where our government and Royal Dutch Shell are destroying a natural area of beauty in my district Mayo. Money Greed and Profit! the little people suffer and the big people get richer! You can see here.

It's sad...it's cruel...and worst of all, it might be even in vain, just like any effort to stop it. But it was a good idea of you to make some time to go out there and make this series of pictures just before everything will be vanished.

Hello everybody,
Thanks for all your replies. And Trudy, don't worry... !! I'm going back to Doel, every visit is a support for the brave habitants and squatters. So if there's someone interested to join me, let me know !
