Well, i was last week in Geneva and tryed some HDR Techniques in a church.
I was very impressed in this Chapell de St.Pierre about the intensive colors, so that i wanted to show you how wonderfull, colorfull this church is...
but: after the postwork i was playing around with the Black and White tool and i liked it much more then the colored ones!!
so sometimes it happends that something you wanna show turns up to be much better in a other way...
i know witch ones i like more, but do you think the same?
wanna know what you think!

those pictures where made in this church:

(no HDR this one... just 7 pictures stitched together... )

IMO , the coloured ones distract by the colours, they are a bit overwhelming, there is too much to see.
The B&W photos on the other hand are more quiet/peacefull, if you know what I mean.....I would have done the same as you did....B&W!!

kind regards ruud

Hi Bunny,

I've noticed that very often architectural photography is better in b&w rather than in colour. My personal explaination is this: architecture is space shaped by material (bricks, concrete, stones etc.). Colour is just the topping on the cake. In pictures, b&w helps to concentrate to space values - depth, dimensions, height - , colour can be distracting. If you watch your pictures, you will notice this: in b&w your eye is focused on the depth of the doorway (no.1), on the shape of the aisle (no.2), on the lines that create the structure of the ceiling: the real architectural values. This does not happen in the colour version, you eye stays on the surface.

Hello,

TBM is right and you did an excellent work , but I've a little preference for the colours, in France we have now many church with no colour on the wall but in the middle ages it was not the case, they were painted and to discover a church the colour give more artistic knowledge .

But it's my personal opinion ;o)

Hello Bunny,

I love the HDR technic and also I like the colors in these pictures.
So if you asked me that question then I have to say that I like your HDR shots the most.
But I have to say that the b/w versions are also very attractive. Very different from the HDR ones. I don't think so this is a good compare to each other.
b/w is a style and also HDR is a style. And some members prefer b/w and others like the HDR style also. But I read also that many woophy members don't like HDR at all. It's a matter of taste I think and I think you made a very nice series in b/w as also HDR.

I wonder how the originals are, very boring I gues.

For example a new uploaded pic of mine, see under, I tried as the best I can and I couldn't make it so nice without the HDR technic. I have to comit that this not a real HDR because it is just made from a single RAW. Just postprocessing the RAW.

Regards,

Oscar

Hi Bunny ,

Well I've been converted to digitally enhanced pictures and when HDR is done properly its just wow factor, but HDR can be over used and over enhanced and loses all credibility to people. Looking at the 2 types you have done just shows you how effective HDR is , it can change a simple picture into outstanding detailed picture rich in colour or tone.

Think when it comes down to colour or mono i think its just personal taste.

Personally i think people are worried that these new techniques are gonna take over the natural one exposure photograph and in all honesty i think not . I see it as an extension to photography just like colour was to the black and white . yet black and white is still a hugely popular technique and hasn't died off.

If it wasn't for people like bunny Oscar and all the others that do these new techniques then photography would be a very one trick pony.

I think that we all should research more try more and then we will develop more and produce more exciting work.

Have i really typed all this in your forum bunny? sorry for ranting but superb hdr work .

Regards jonny

Ps heres 2 examples of colour and black white Hdr i have seen.

Thank you all for your opinion!

@TBM: this is very well said. it is certanly the reason why i like the bw version more! i just could't explain it

@Oscar: well, both, color AND bw version are in HDR! the bw version just 'happends' to be made after i saved the color one. with exactly the same colored pictures i played around by taking all colors away. in PS CS3 there is a special bw-tool for it. fantastic how many different versions of the same picture in bw you can make with it!

@jonny: i'm not a HDR fan myself. but there are situations where you have no chance doing a nice picture without this technique. like in churches with a lot of dark corners and windows. otherwise the windows are far to overexposed or the darker corners withour any details just black. a flash is inpossible, the size of the church makes it impossible. so if anyone wants to make a 'perfect' picture and there is a tequnic like this, there is no question of doubt to use it! and of course the color or bw is just a question of taste...

thank to all
Bunny

I think it depends on what you want to show the most: if it is the architecture you are interested in then B&W, if you want to show the beautiful colours and decors of the church then the HDR.
I prefer the first picture in HDR, the second in B&W and the third I can't decide!
Anyhow, great shots!

I have taken TBM's advice and transfered 247 architectural images to B&W and wow I can see things so much clearer now thanks for the info

Nice pictures... I like the BW most.... also I like the idea of using HDR to recover fine details and after converting it to BW, so you can have the best of the 2 conbined...

Hi Bunny, I looked at your pictures and I will say that I like the 1 and 2 also in B/W ,the architecture is much clear than, but the pict of the ceiling I like in colour, because that showes more the art of the paintings.
The problem in my opinion is that HDR makes the colours too much most of the time.
But I would say that the way Oscar is using it, I like it well. ( sorry for my English )

Bunny, l love the coloured versions. It gives one a good idea of the richness of the detail within the space; busier, flatter, less DOF , yes, but oh so lavish within. B&w, great views of the 'space contained'.
