Sangam, I like your portraits very well. Maybe you can tell us more about the festival, what does it mean that the man has a coloured face.

Thanq Dieuwertje.. This famous festival is called as Gangamma Jaathra which is celebrated in Punganur district(Andhrapradesh, India) on this occassion..they would have told god that,if his or her deeds are granted they would sacrifice a goat, cock or a buffalo to god..on that auspicious day they colour them selves with odd colors and dance near the temple till he is tired and falls down..then its known as god has blessed him..God in this temple is believed that she can vanish all their problems and give them good rain to grow their fields..as far as i knew something about this festival is as mentioned.. Pls let me know ur feedback for Some more snaps of this festival!!

Thank you Sangam for your description of the festival. Like Dieutwerje I am as interested in the background of a photo as I am about the photo itself and yes SJS, extraordinary does describe the first two photos. Different strokes for different folks I suppose. No worse than stuffing yourself full of Easter eggs

Dear Sangam, I think I can give you some tips. However, since I'm not familar with Canon type numbers, it is important to know if you can adjust settings on the camera (with a DSLR you can, with other camera's it depends on the features). A basic rule in portrait photography is to focus on the subject only (focus on the eyes), leaving the background unsharp. YOU DID VERY WELL WITH THE WRINKLED LADY! As watching the other pictures, especially the one with the colored man standing in front of the person with the cream silk blouse, the background gives too much arousal. Solutions: 1) when shooting at daylight, use a wide open diaphragm (e.g F 2.8-F 4) (as with the old lady). 2) when using a flash, use a very short shutterspeed (e.g. 1/250-1/500 sec.). Is this helpful? Regards, Peter.

About the DSLR: I've send you a seperate message. The Nikon is OK, but you have to realise it has no focusing motor, so the lenses you will have to use are all with a focusing motor of their own! If you have the choice, consider Sony alpha as well!! About ISO: the ISO rate shows the sensitivity to light. The higher the ISO, the less light you need to make a picture. If you double the ISO, you can lower the shutter speed bij one stop. However, high ISO makes more noise, esepcially on the darker part of the picture. How much noise is related to the type of camera. It is better NOT to putv the setting on auto-ISO, since then, the camera will choose the ISO settings en probably cause pictures with more noise. In general, noise will not be visible by most camera's with ISO values up to 400. If you want to take pictures when there's only little light available, you should try to raise your ISO amount and see what happens. Regards, Peter.
