Some weeks ago pansa started a Forum topic -
www.woophy.com/forum/index.php?action=vthread&forum=4&topic=2901 showing beautiful Winter pictures - snow, ice, etc.
Where I live, in Northern Ireland, we rarely have much snow and little hard frost. I, therefore, wondered how I could picture Winter here. This photograph is one attempt -
The aim was to show bleakness - trees with no leaves, fields waiting for Spring, etc. How do other members from more temperate places show Winter ?
Regards
Geoff. ( Geoffrey McElwaine )

It's a good question, how to show winter without snow? I asked myself the same question a couple of weeks ago and took this picture:
We don't have a temperate climate here at all--it was -16C the day I took that picture. But for me the steam does it--that's not industrial smoke. And something about the light. In your pic, Geoff, the green grass means it would not look like winter to me, even with the bare fields and trees. But it's still a nice picture!

Hi Geoff, I know what you mean, we don't have much winter either because it's an island, till now just one morning, but I made some winterpictures with a winter atmosphere I think.
Here they are...

Hi Geoffrey, nice topic and indeed you are right about picturing the winter. Here in Holland we have almost no winter. And when it is cold there is almost no snowfall.
Today I was visiting the Veluwe, the sun was shining and the temperatures were very comfortable. So I decide to take my tripod into the woods to shoot some pictures with these nice clouds. And the result is much pictures but almost all pictures are useless.
Here an example of my winterscene:

The snow and frost have not arrived here on Lake Garda, northern Italy.
How do we know it is winter?
The water level in Lake Garda has started to rise after a low water level throughout the summer months due to the lack of snow and rain last winter.
Yes...we are having lots of rain ! !
However, the good side is that when it stops raining and the mist lifts, we have such wonderful panoramics of the lake, mountains and olive groves.

Another winterscene on the Veluwe. I have to add this place is the most beautiful in August. Then the heath is purple and the grasses are yellow. But I have to wait for that for some months.

Geoffrey, I read your comments on winter pictures and went out with my camera. No snow here in Dublin only rain and it's quite dark. the pictures below are the results of playing about with the sharpness, the focus and the flash. It took a while standing out in the rain but it was fun and I'v learned a few new things about my camera these are taken with a Casio QV-R61. good forum topic

Here on the Italian Riviera sunny days are not infrequent in winter. In this case the light is of a particular quality, due to the strong but very low sun, that creates long shadows. The naked trees do the rest:
And, by the way, just today (Feb 22nd) I spotted the first blooming mimosa:
Spring is still far, but at least we have a hope...

Hi Geoffrey, here in the Mid Atlantic region of the U.S. We take snow for granted now with the climate changes there are more droughts than ever. When I was a boy water from a well ao spring was sweet and safe now well water is often bitter and useless but we still get some snow

Hi Geoffrey,
I'd like to offer a slight variation on the excellent theme you started: The first photo is of a meadow in Yosemite Valley during a snowless February. The second photo shows the same meadow, photographed from the opposite side, during a very snowy February. Enjoy!

I like all seasons, but winter is not bad at all with a lot of snow. Here are some of my winter impressions...

Hi everybody, sending one from the tropics, India. This is winter, but there is no snow. The signs of winter in this part of the world are the foggy background, the wrappers on the person of the villagers, the yellow blossoms on the mustard plants on the plot of land at distance and the various aromas I pathetically failed to captutre with my camera.
