I say congrats to member of the month it goes to show its not how long you've been on the site but the quality of work. photography is art and each person has there own interpretation of how a photo makes them react and this is a photography site after all.
Think some of the long term users should remember they were once a new member and i think its a boost to this site awarding such a new member makes people feel you can achieve something on this site and that you not in a cue.
Since ive been on this site ive been welcomed very well but after a while ive noticed a very dominant group who not meaningfully can upset newer members block voting and strong opinions take for instance the unofficial contest , just see who some people vote for and then look at past comps and see very similar voting then they all say well done dont know how you did it. well i do as you voted them that's why. anyway feel like im ranting here . the main thing is its good photography ive noticed this past month some people have just posted there whole holiday photos and that makes it difficult to spot such wonderful photos like the member of the months so please instead of flooding woophy with mundane holiday snaps think like the member of the month and lets see woophy hot up with arty and more thought of photos.
sorry if i offend but there's too many people preaching same thing and the little guy(new members) suffer the onslaught of bad criticism because they are new they think they will be ignored.
jonny

ps finishing on subject i opened thread to say well done to people for the month just past to find a new thread opened tshirt winner so obviously im not in the circle i see

I'm sorry, I was wrong.
I share the same feelings like Ortho and others (who expressed their thoughts and feelings here on the forum and maybe others who doesn't dare to).
I thought it was honorable to be mentioned as member off the month. A full month on the frontpage off Woophy, with so many great photographers. Wow.
If I saw the portefolio of people like Akbar, Paulo Calafate, Bogers, ewest, Martin de Rijk, ... They were mentioned last year as member of the month. And I thought yes they deserve it and further that it would be on honour to become one, but it would be very difficult to become one.
But after today what I see and what I read how to become member off the month I am disappointed.
I agree :
- Joris you'r the boss.
- Everybody got to have the chance.
- Quality above quantity.
- ...
It's my own fault. I had another idea about becoming member off the month. I was wrong.
But it's ok. It isn't a target for me anymore.
I enjoy being here on Woophy with so many good photographers. The joy being here is more important then the prices and mentioning.
Thank you all.

I share Geoffrey's feeling of the advantage of members from exotic locations in the eyes of the European judges. Also the "news" winners seem to have that privilige. We have seen 2 successive winners with photos from people walking through the water in India I presume and now one from an African prostitute. The last one was very touching, no discussion about that, but more of the story behind it than the photographic quality. A good photo, but one out of a repetitive sequence of that kind of winning photos. IMO Akbar's photo of poverty with a twinkle is better (IMO !!!!!!!).

The prostitute was from Bulgaria and Akbar (who together with Bogers is one of my personal favourite photographers) was member of the month march 2007.

Akbar's picture was not submitted to the competition like many other good pictures (I belief), and if you don’t join the competition you cant win it.

The reason I choose kmales (and all the others) as a member of the month was (among others) that I wanted to share this neglected treasure with you. I did not expected everybody to agree with me on the quality but I also did not expected this…. (and yes there was also an element of not picking every time somebody from the same group/country/style)

Hope you realise that although I want to I cannot make everybody happy....

Fair enough Joris. No personal (negative) feelings. No need to keep everybody happy.

I think that its not our choice and that it should be left to woophy to choose winners for the month as it their right to that why we have the unofficial comp so we can choose a winner . its like all photography sites the edits/owners choose what they like or what they think the mass will like and that's fair . And we get our chance back in the unofficial one. But what i cant stand is rudeness and to say that someone doesn't deserve to be a winner of this months member of month because he or she has contributed to the site bar the photos is appalling and the comment from Paulo about Kmales work not making people want to go is rude have you asked kmale to those photos in this thread as i think if it was me id be really upset that people can say and do these things and i think its shameful of you all and you should be congratulating kmale for a good effort.
After seeing how small minded and petty some of you long term members on here can be it makes me think i should withdraw my member ship . im so dissipointed in this site

I think everybody is entitled to have their own opinion but I must agree with Jonny that lately the tone of the discussion on Woophy is changing.

Sometimes I looks like people enjoy complaining and arguing more than having fun on the site.

But also I like to emphasise that subtle border between humour, constructive criticism, and sarcasm is hard to recognize in this community of mostly non native English speakers (like myself)

In Holland we say ‘The Soup is not Eaten as Hot as Served’ which means that usually things are not meant as harsh as they sound ….

Jonny Greentree, are you an Englishman? Sorry, but I understand much better all the non English people than you. Your phrase construction is sometimes impenetrable.

screw this site

Another phrase that I don't understand. Is this dialect?

Jonny has left the building...

What building?
Ohhh! I understand. He leaves Woophy. Why?
What a lack of sense of humour! I don't believe in this.

Yes, this building!

Just when things were getting a little lighter.

It is a pity. I much enjoyed his prose.
