In December 2006, the pic of the month was awarded to a member with a portfolio of 1 (one) picture, who didn't even react to the congratulations he got, and has had no activity whatsoever since. But OK, the photo was good.
In December 2007, the Member of the Month is awarded to a member with a portfolio of 24 pics, all uploaded during two days (June 30 and July 1), and with no activity since (no other pics, no participation in the Forum, nothing). And he is Member of the Month? I think that is an insult to those who are active Woophy members. If you had wanted to recognize him, you should have named him Photographer of the Month, but definitely not Member of the Month.

Thank you for saying what some of us were surely thinking. I think kmales photos are lovely and wish s/he would return and load more, and that's the only thing I can think of when Woophy judges award "member of the month" to someone like this, that it might encourage them to do so.
But it's disappointing, when there are so many active, good photographers here who are contributing to the site in a variety of ways, comments, pictures, forum topics, regular uploads AND making pictures that are worthy of "member of the month." This isn't a member's category so I guess there's little to be said about it.
It is in marked contrast, however, to the enthusiasm everyone seems to have about the "Unofficial Contest"

First :
I agree with Ortho158, the term member of the month isn't correct. Maybe two awards a member of the month and a photographer of the month ?
but Second :
If you're posting pictures in order to become member of the month, than you're totally wrong ! This is a place for sharing pictures. There are on Woophy good photographers, very good photographers and then you have the best photographers. Try to evaluate yourself and be critical for yourself. Have respect for the others, for the photographers who aren't so good like you but also for the photographers who are better than you ! Sometimes that's the problem.. Don't be jealous and try to learn from the others..
I hope that I expressed it well !

In my opinion,
- Member of the month is : Photographer of the month (quality of portfolio, in terms of esthetic, originality, interest)
- T Shirt winner is : Member of the month (Quality of portfolio, quality of critics and comments, quality of partipation in forums.. and I don't speak about quantity but quality)
So, I think there is a mistake in the title, not more.
~
Ortho, I fully understand your feeling, but ... I didn't fully understand who you are speaking about the pic of the month in december 2006 ? Can't be Poul Madsen & Janette(January 2007) , can't be Laura Lizancos Mora & Drora (December 2006) ?
~
On my side, I'm extremely happy to see Bedros Azinyan and Zoltan Balogh awarded or even just quoted this month.
~
@Ive : I see we are saying almost the same about the tilte

Hurrah ! Once again Ortho has had the courage to say what many ( well, me at least ! ) members had been thinking ! Nonkel, I doubt whether anyone actually does upload pictures for the purpose of being awarded Member of the Month.
To regain member's respect, I consider that the title Member of the Month needs to reflect something of the member's overall contribution to Woophy. As has already been said, in addition to the quality of his / her portfolio, it could include such factors as his / her contribution to Forum discussions, and the quantity / quality of his / her comments on other's portfolios. To award it solely on the basis of the " best portfolio " ( in any case, how is that to be defined ? ) would be to limit it to a handful of members who would then win it again and again.
My own ( perhaps cynical ) impression has been that the Member of the Month had often been selected because he / she happened to live in an exotic country ( perhaps the only Woophy member to do so ), or had uploaded pictures from an exotic location ( exotic, that is, to European eyes ).
Regards
Geoff. ( Geoffrey McElwaine )

I don't think either Ortho or I could be said to be posting pictures to be member of the month, Ive, and I'm sure you didn't mean that about us! I don't care about being member of the month. Maybe you're right, the name is wrong... If this isn't a community, then what is it? If people come back because they are named Member of the Month, then that's good, to be part of the community. But it shows a lack of familiarity with the site on the part of the site-owner to pick as *members* of the month people who have hardly spent any time on the site at all. I don't mind if they are picked as the winners of the contests, because some people just do that--enter contests. That's cool, if that's what it's about for them.
As I said, I think kmales photos are beautiful. I'd like to see more. But if she is going to be named "member of the *month*" 7 months after she posted the pictures and never returned, I would maybe like a better understanding from Woophy/Joris what "member of the month" is supposed to represent. I'd rather see YOU (Ive) named member of the month! You make great pictures, AND you write features for the newsletter, you organize members gatherings, you participate in the contests, you make a lot of comments, etc. That is a step beyond getting a t-shirt. Just my opinion!

@nonket and aline, -wise words-.
@ortho158, dont be jealous and have fun, for me the member of the month is for the same reason cited by aline.
For me it is much better to have a small portfolio, with originality and good pictures. To have a portfolio with hundreds of photographs of vacations -boring- :_(. To now nobody congratulated member of the month, from here my congratulations to kmales although some are jealous of this decision.
I think that with this decision administrators of woophy trying to raise the quality photographic, decision that I like a lot, giving more importance to the quality of the images that the activity of the members.
Also a question? Why some members of the month have left woophy, and therefore are no longer members of the month.
HAPPY WEEKEND

No no !
I didn't mean Ortho (of course not) ! He doesn't care about becoming member of the month. That's what i meant with " I hope that I expressed it well"...
But there are some other members who pay to much attention to get medals, to become member of the month,...

@Davidoff: Ortho jealous! ?? *please*! You have got to be kidding. . He's a long time, active member here, and he's entitled to express an opinion about the actions of the site-owners after his long contribution here, which includes comments, photos, activity with other members, etc. How very simplistic to assume it is jealousy.
I think the site-owners must be trying to make a point with their last two "members of month", but if so, it would be nice to have it explained.
@Geoffrey, there have been a lot of European members of the month. I don't think that's it. You can review the list going back to the beginning on the news page right sidebar.

@scarlet, I said jealous as a feeling, not as an insult.
In his words, he deserve to be a member of the month, because spends too much time on woophy and apparently dislikes him that strangers members without activity in the site but with good pictures take all the prizes.
But this is only my interpretation of his words.
Many times we forget that this page was created by a group of people with their preferences and tastes, perhaps they like ---as Geoffrey said--- the exotic side of the world, and these point of view must be respected.
Those members disagree with these decisions can be made UNNOFICIAL MEMBER OF THE MONTH...:-)
Ortho this is a photography site the awards give by them, not to see who spend more hours in front of the computer.
But if you want an award, I nominate you to the the most active member, for the good technic work to do in this site.
Paulo Tijuana unfortunately is not a beautiful city, but it has a very special magic, the people who live there are very friendly and hospitable, please do not make jokes of things that you do not know.

I did not read all of your comments but I sense that the Member or the Moth procedure needs some explanation
This is how we do it (of course very subjective)
- sometimes we reward somebody because of what he / she did for the site
- sometimes we reward somebody for what he she did for other members
- sometimes we reward somebody from the inner circle of the Woophy community
- sometimes we reward somebody who is not active part of the Woophy community (but who we like to stimulate)
- sometimes we look at quality of photo's
- sometimes we look at country of origin (not always somebody from the same continent)
- sometimes we choose somebody who has been nominated often by you (the members)
- and of course sometimes we let our own obscure taste decide who we want to put in the spotlight. This happened in december (Marcel) and January (Joris)
We believe it is our own right to make this subjective decision.
The reason we have this member of the month is to reward and to stimulate and of course not to insult all the other members who of course also deserve it.
Judging from Otrho’s reaction probably next month it is time again for somebody with a longer track record.
Also I really like to repeat my call from the Newsletter that everybody is welcome to participate in the writing of the Newsletter.

@Joris, yes thank you. Such an explanation is called for, probably clarified from time to time for new members as well. And you do have the right as owner of the site to pick anyone you please...
But to make an addendum--you might want to think about what a "member" is here at Woophy We've certainly had some interesting interpretations of that in the last year.

Point taken Paulo,

It might be better to send such members an e-mail, asking them to come back. Making them member of the month is surely too radical a means to achieve this purpose!

Ortho, thanks for the courage! You are right, and that OF COURSE is not jealousy but clear-sightedness and honesty, "month" is a very precise word!
Regarding Aline's and Geoff's thoughts about what the Member of the Month should be, I don't need to say I agree with them (it's too late) as Joris already put the dots over the iii. Anyone can be nominated M of M, as the criterium, his own with the decisive power over Woophy, is so broad! So, I already realized here that, you are happy and stay or you aren't and leave! I'm staying for all big friends I made from everywhere, not for having won a fairly nice Unnoficial Contest (thanks Oscar and Ruud!) for 3 times and only having a single icon on my profile, not 3 as it should be. Seeking icons collection? No! Just what is the right thing! And because the U.C. deserves to be well seen to broad its participation to a bigger number of members! (a small extra note: I myself awakened a wonderful member for his portfolio I only met by chance recently, Wintermute, that he should go to the Forum and see the U.Contest he didn't know yet! And there he is, and I'm happy for it and for him!
Oops, I'm better now to have expressed myself as I felt!
A final word to P.Calafate: please take me with you, I'm curious too ;)
