Here are some pictures from the Carbide Shooting tradition in parts of the Netherlands.
(this is what wikipedia has to say about it:)
It is still used in the Netherlands and Belgium for a traditional custom called Carbidschieten (Shooting Carbide). To create an explosion, carbide and water are put in a milk churn with a lid. Ignition is usually done with a torch. Some villages in the Netherlands fire multiple milk churns in a row as an old year tradition. The old tradition comes from the old pagan religion to chase off spirits.
More for Dutch readers here: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbidschieten
Normaly it's done with milk churns but at this pace they used a much bigger tank!
The pictures are stills from little movies i made with my camera, so the quality isn't all that. But I just wanted to show you a little bit of old years tradition.
And ofcourse A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!

that looks like a massive amount of fun, but you would get hauled off to jail for doing that here in Massachusetts!

Well, it's not excactly legal here but since it's tradition I guess the police doesn't mind that much. Although it's also quite dangerous!

In Kampen they do this inside of the center of the town.
5-10 milk containers are shot at the same time.
This year a child was severely wounded.
20 years ago someone got killed.
Officially it's forbidden but it's a tradition over many generations.
In my youth the police hunted the "milk container shooters" and this ended several times in total chaos.
Unfortunately i don't have any pictures of the event in my portfolio, i'll shoot them next year.
