These two photographs were taken within minutes of each other.
Does the panoramic format version add anything "extra" to such streetscapes images?

I think it all depends on the subject matter of your photograph . landscapes to me are always associated with panoramic . but both your pictures are telling a different story in the different formats and to me i prefer the standard format for cityscapes and points of interest as i could always crop to narrow the photo. but its a difficult subject to judge.
regards jonny
ps nice topic

johnny is right about the depending of the subject, but IMO in this case I think the second picture is better.
Here the landscape format pulls the eye in to the picture by the fence on the right and the stand on the left into the picture towards the middle.
They are both good pictures, but the landscape appeals more to me.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I got a new camera before my trip that makes it very easy to switch between the two and I found I like the wider format better in many cases, and I find myself cropping results a lot less. I was always ending up with extraneous stuff above & below in standard format that I wasn't interested in--I wanted what was straight before me and the wide view does that. I'm not talking about super-wide-panoramas (they are nice too, but not my cup of tea to make).

Pictures soon (this weekend, but sorry, there are LOTS so I hope I'm patient enough to deal with upload times--I'll get out the knitting)

Tony, as you see, opinions are so different! Jonny is right when he says "it all depends on the subject matter". For cityscapes it's also true, imo. In THIS particular case, and only having in account those 2 pics of yours, I particularly prefer the first. And see how opinions differ: for me, the fence on the right sticks my eye to it, not pulls to the center. The first man on the foreground also does that, and as he's cut, the point of interest is not that much; and the one in the middle of the group covers the main point just below the arch. Besides, as here the large format doesn't add much, I think the first pic has more impact and concentrates our look in a minor area, the one around the central point where most people wanders and the beautiful arch stays. Neverthless this doesn't mean, at least for me, that in all situations I would prefer the standard 2x3 frame! Mainly when we have apart enough from the view! Just have a look at those nice cityscapes pics from member Bernhard, for instance ,(or mine 372814 or 450279 or 448137). Nice topic! Greets

I think that we get used to "panoramic" formats because most televisions have a 16:9 aspect ratio nowadays. Of your 2 pxs I prefer the second because it shows more of the street scenary and I have a more "stable" feeling with it. Nevertheless of course don't cut the feet etc.
