Folks. I should be grateful for your assistance. Two, or three, weeks ago, I uploaded this picture -
Since then 18 members have viewed it. None has commented on, or rated, it. Yesterday, I uploaded -
Since then 28 members have viewed it, and it has attracted several ( positive ) comments and good ratings.
I am confused as to why one has been so " popular ", while the other has failed to arouse more than members' passing interest. To my ( admittedly biased ) eye, both are of a reasonable technical standard, and are well composed, etc. Can any member enlighten me ?
Regards
Geoff. ( Geoffrey McElwaine )

Hi Geoff. I looked at both your pict and I will say, the second one pleased me most. Why? For me the first one seems two pict, a village and the water, for my feeling it does not match.
And the village is a bit blurred when it's large.
When I look to the wood, it give me a good feeling, the warm colours, the ditch meandering through the wood, it all just nice and well composed.
Regards, Dieuwertje

Hi Geoffrey, off course everybody has his or her taste. Remember the latin saying degustibus et colouribus non est disputandem. But when I look to you two pictures I choose immediately for the second one. The first one gives me (personnaly) the impression that the back is too dark and the front too light. (I express it too strong but to give you a better idea how I feel it) The second one has several teints off green and braun and the river is walking trew this colourpallet what I like to see. I hope I explaned it well. Greatings, Rik

I agree with Dieuwertje and Rik Herrygers.
In the first, there is a bright foreground and a dark background without great details. In my opinion the contrast is too high. It's almost a b&w picture.
The second picture is more attractive: the ditch leads the eyes in the picture, the colours of the leaves on trees and on the ground, the sunlight in the left up corner.
Regards.

I agree also, the first one is technical IMO not that good because the city is a little bit dark, has less details and some noise. The foreground is to bright. These combinations doesn't fit eachother.
The second pic is lovely to look at. Much to see and a lot of colors in it. As I imagine the thumbnails then the second one is more atractive.
Hope this helps you a hand.

about the pictures..I agree with all others..........but something more to think about is when you upload those pictures.....at what time of the day did you upload it, which day, how many pictures were at that time already uploaded......I think this are also things to keep in mind.
And this topic gives also a kind of view on this subject....

Folks. Thanks for all your comments. They remind me of the stanza in Robbie Burns poem " To a Louse " -
" O would some Power the gift to give us
To see ourselves as others see us !
It would from many a blunder free us,
And foolish notion :
What airs in dress and gait would leave us,
And even devotion ! "
( I have used an English translation, rather than the Lowland Scots of the original. )
Your comments have made me look at my " neglected " picture " as others see it " : not a totally pleasant experience, but valuable if I am to improve as a photographer.
Regards
Geoff. ( Geoffrey McElwaine )
P.S. fotogravenswaay : you make an important point. I am afraid that the number of daily uploads means that I only have time to look at images which startle my eye. Because they lack immediate " impact " quieter, more contemplative, pictures may be overlooked - and that is a great pity.

i enjoy the "terraced" look of the first. the long meandering triangles that continue into the landscape and then architecture of the building rows. there is a lot going on in this photo. the second is just lovely and inviting and takes little to enjoy it. i think in part that the emotional impact is that it's just a place we all would rather be. good work on both!
peace

Geoff, your second picture gives me a warm and welcoming feeling,I would like to walk there and smell autumn, your first picture doesn't give me any feeling and in my humble opnion it hasn't the same technical quality as the second one. greetings Giz
