Very well put, Ruud!

# Posted: 5 Oct 07 00:11

I was shocked a couple of days by the poor rating that have had John in its great last shots and I liked its work very well but I thought he 's better than me, he doesn' t complaint .

I posted quite 2000 shots in woophy and all my rated shots have been downrated and sometime (my last hollydays shots) were downrated around ten in 10mn, I pushed the red button of abuse and it was explained to me it's normal my shots are not too bad rated, what is possible but if you see the shots you taken with your heart you could be shocked and it doesn't take pleasure.

The rating is not a proof of quality, you just have to invite your friends, family and colleagues to rate your shots but to receive a good comment by other photographers is better and the solution is known : no rating without comment or no more rating just comments even why not just vote for a shot if you like and do nothing if not (no more downrating !!!)

Many artists have left this site due to this problem and today I'm sad for John.

Yes I Know many topics were written about that before and nothing was changed and yes I know my shots will be downrated after this topic but i like your comments, your shots, your topics and I'm addicted to woophy ;o)

Good Luck John

DOWNRATERS around the world, I have some pictures that you will never be able to downrate:

167608, 167629, 175427, 194425, 199368, 202755, 213503, 213518, 213523, 217189, 222953, 222954, 222963, 222965, 226296, 225343, 236587, 236618, 287840, 287853, 287854, 287857, 287858, 287905, 287912, 287942, 287943, 287954, 287958, 296959, 296974, 416161, 416160, 263563, 363571, 296977, 296979.

Because if you give a 1 you are uprating it ... and 1 is better than 0!

A sad loss for woophy;

but it has all been said over and over..... I'm getting tired of the discussion; it's a fact and in the long run the rating balances again, beause everybody knows a good photo with a low rating and good comments is wrong.......

PS Maybe we should start a forum / special page with links to former woophy members...

@ Fellner

I have never downrated your collection, sure., & I don't know how much bad rates you received.

But I remember your collection (and just have take a new look on it), and maybe the downrates for you are the result of a misunderstanding :

Unfortunately, your collection has big resemblances with the collection of an other member, who is posting, under different profiles, numerous pictures of France, Germany, Italy, Austria etc.. all stolen on the Web.
It is frequent the collection of this member is downrated by other people, when someone discovers the trickery.
So, if it is a misunderstanding, I think you can contact info@woophy.com in order to defend your collection.
It would be a pity for you to be the first indirect victim of this falsification, because as far as I know, until now, hundreds of accounts have been denounced then deleted without never one mistake.
In the same time, I hope it is just mistake. In this case, I'm sure it will be corrected.

ray9,

you stated your images were downrated. However almost half of your images are in the 4 to 5 region, which is excellent, and i do have some in may favourites box. That's probably what Joris meant when stating your images are rated quite well.
A clean 5 is a situation resulting from too few votes. The best images are usually in the 4.2 to 4.8 regions and have 50+ votes.

To put the in-general-much-too-good-woophy-ratings into perspective i'll provide a statistic here of a stock site that rates all submitted photos (currently 1.5 millions) by a company jury before including them into the portfolio. This is to assist customers in the selection process, i.e. showing better images first in the lightbox:

5 - 0,25% of all 1.5 million images
4 - 6% of all images
3 - 60% of all images
2 - 25% of all images
1 - 10% of all images

This statistic is quite different from woophy's rating statistic which i remember to have seen in some earlier rxxxxx-thread. In my opinion, the ratings by the stock sites's rating staff are very fair. Remember, 1 is average, not bad. Please note, the site is stocked by pros, so even these folks do submit average images, and yes, customers demand these when it fits their ideas.

Hopefully, woophy will introduce an evaluation system based on many components, much like flickr's interestingness which does not have a rating thingy and has quite clever mechanisms to nullify imagepushing by buddies and other dirty tricks.

Remember, there HAS to be a rating/evaluating system. No casual visitor of this site interested in photos a region or a city on the map will wade through hundreds of mediocre images. He will simply click the cross at the top right after a first glance.

Well said, Zerega.
I hope one day have the possibility to use the rates 3 and 4 as easely as 5, and why not even 1 and 2, in order to encourage or applaud a picture even when it is not EXCELLENT.

# Posted: 5 Oct 07 17:38

.........
The current rating sistem can work if more people will rate pictures.

When some unhappy person wish to annoyed other member then he use the "1" with no relation to the picture. If more people will rate than it will not make much difference.

This problem will never end so I hope John will change his mind.

Wise words Drora, and in this case I think John made the downrater the winner by leaving, so who won in the end?

# Posted: 5 Oct 07 20:07

Thanks Zerega for your explanation , as I said maybe my shots are not so bad rated and Drora is right more people will repair a downrated shot previously broken by a 1 but what is not normal , it's when all your shots are downrated in 1time (10 mn ) by only one person !!!
who is the balance ? finally it's this guy who decide which photo is good or who's person will have all its shots downrated .
During the last year too many good photographers left woophy for rival sites and the rules are not modified to prevent that, a pity .

And finally what I planned in my first email is arrived, many of my 5 rated pics were downrated !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks to anonymous person who find an occupation by fed up others ................

@Aline, you said that maybe some day we can give a 3 or 4 as easy as a 5.
I personally sometimes give some members a 3, but in that case I descibe what is not good and what things can be better. So that this member can learn and improve their skills.
I think we all should give more 3 and 4 ratings so we help members more to improve skills. But giving a 3 or 4 can only be in combination with a good comment otherwise you better cannot rate it.

I agree with zerega, I think that we are obsessed too much by the high ratings, in my personal opinion this site is very interesting since with I have managed to grow as photographer and have known interesting people.
In this image.............
397193
I estimate very much opinions like of Ortho158, because they are really sincere and in my opinion they are very good, since I observe that though this image is not beautiful that actually it is not, it provokes sensations that it is for what I do photographies.
Personally I give votes of 1, 2, 3, and very few occasions 4 and 5, and do not feel a culprit for these rates.
Though always I accompany of some constructive commentary when I see possibilities of improving in the author of the image.
Do not obsess with the votes, experiment say something with his photos and please do not put any more photos of the same topic always .... it is a joke.
And if John has gone away let's respect his decision, maybe need a time and return with another point of view and new pictures, sometimes needs a time of reflection to grow as photographer and to try new options.
Best regards...sergio.

The problem of woophy is that we are friends... and we give each other 5 :-)))
other votes surprise us..... i have the same problem :-))(
but a vote is not everything... so hang on....

# Posted: 6 Oct 07 00:03

@ Sergio : I've nothing against low ratings, but don't do it anonymous. Just say why.

But I agree, don't obsess with the votes.

# Posted: 6 Oct 07 00:20 - Edited by: sercas72

I agree wth you Chriss, I dont understand why? is bad to give a 1 rating a photo that deserve it.

# Posted: 6 Oct 07 00:24

It isn't bad to give a picture a 1-rating but just say why !! Don't do it anonymous !!

# Posted: 6 Oct 07 01:36

Nonkel I agree with you in anonymous rating isnt good, but in my opinion maybe the 75% of pictures in woophy dont follow the rule number 2 in -TERMS OF USE- "DONT PUT IRRELEVANT PICTURES", if you give comments at all pictures that deserve 1, that are neverending history, for example I take a picture, only take me one minute because is really easy to found...
417784
What are you doing with this irrelevant picture? give 1, ignore them, but give the comment is to much for me, why? because I dont see nothing in my opinion.
Sorry for my hard comment but I try to give some consructive critic t this site.
Because I think some members share all camera memory, and dont matters the rules.

# Posted: 6 Oct 07 08:39

Sergio,

You're right about the 75% of pictures. The good pictures are drowning between that 75%. Pictures, als the good ones, become rated during one day, the 24 hours after they're posted. Than they disappear... Would a uploading-limit be a sollution ?

That irrelevant picture : I ignore it. Maybe it's wrong, let it be a point of discussion.

# Posted: 6 Oct 07 12:04

There we have it again, the down rating ,a never ended story I think. I agree with Drora and Oscar, don't mind the down rating but learn of the comments and when I give a 3 or lower I tell than why I do that.
By the way John was leaving woophy earlier and came back after some time and so did some other members, so who knows now?
