Found an email this morning of John Melskens that he had erased his account, because of anonymous ratings. It's a real disaster to loose one of the most recognizable members of Woophy in this way. John's portfolio had a strong own signature. Of course we can follow John further on FLICKR but I will miss him on Woophy.

Regards

Pansa

A salute to John

I also have received his e-mail. It's a pity that members of John's category was erased their accounts.
I will follow John's trajectory in other addresses, but I think it's a loss for Woophy-

Regards DOLO

The same here. Too bad it has to come this far, and I'm afraid others will follow him. It seems a "well known" member is doing the consequent downrating.

It's very sad that John Melkens has erased his account. He had a great collection with a very specific style. I hope that no other member are going to follow him.

Yesterday the city of the month was Lauwersoog, my favorite place..
I got so many very nice comments, thank you all , very much.!!
But, before yesterday, I had 12 pict. with one or more ratings of a five and now 2 !!
Many "good "pict. of me are down rated yesterday without comments !!
Nevertheles I stay , because of the wonderful comments I got yesterday !!!
But I can understand John Melskens !!

I'm very sad that John has left.
Woophy has lost a great photographer.
It's really time to do something with the downraters.
I suggest to make anonymus rating impossible.
Rating only possible combined with giving a comment or something like that.
Good pictures usually get a lot of comments.
If we want to see the beautiful pics of other members we just have to search at pictures with lots of commenst

Oh, and if we all going to run away...the downrater has lots of fun..........
DONT RUNN AWAY...AND STAY

# Posted: 4 Oct 07 13:45

I agree with Joop van Dijk sad that John has left and the suggest rating only possible combined with giving a comment, seems me a very good idea.

All this anonymous-downraters we have to ignore in any-way so I agree with Joop and
also say DO'NT ERASE FROM WOOPHY BECAUSE OF SUCH ASS-HOLE'S !

JOHN COME BACK ! ! ! and let them go to Hell.

# Posted: 4 Oct 07 14:00

a lot of people encounter the downrater but do as Aiso does, enjoy the good comments and try to ignore the downrater. It is the risk when you are on the world wide web and I think you have to take it or leave it, John left, so be it.

Please, folks, do not react so hysterically about downrating incidents every time they happen.

If you recognize an obvious downrate attack (i.e. lots of 1s in a series of images, not just an occasional 2 or 3 for an image that may be worth a mere 2 or a 3 instead of the standard 5) just push the abuse button and write a small message into the offered kind-of-abuse-box, saying that this image and several others just received a 1 and if you can check this please. You don't need to do this for every image, one suffice.

Woophy can trace and erase each single rating or series of ratings and its rater and therefore can identify members who rate a series of 1s.

@Zerega :

I agree with you.
We have to talk about downrating when a certain number of pictures obviously not bad because highly rated by several members, are all rated "1" at the same time, very quickly and without comment.

Unfortunately, we are numerous to know here that push the button and explain without angryness and honestly the problem is not the magical solution.
The abuse button is dedicated for denounce thiefs, or everything out of the Terms of Use.
Down-rating is not included. So we just have to hope our request will be listened, and something exeptional will be done.
It was done from times to times in the past.

I'm myself extremely hurted and disapointed by the behaviour of a member at this subject. He knows that himself and Joris too.

I understand fully the John's reaction. In the same time, I deeply regret he has to leave Woophy, I appreciate highly him and his work.

I love this subject!
Jonh, don't leave us because the dowraters. You know my opinion about it.
I agree with all of you about this amazing situation and I liked to offer a gift to all the downraters of the world.

Unfortunately whether people stay or go, the downrater(s?) and impostor(s?) are permitted by the site owners to continue what they do, whether abuse is reported or not. I'm more offended by the person who opens fake accounts and posts pirated photos than I am by the downraters, but they are both symptoms of a problem. It's not like we can be "self-policing" as a community. We don't have any control over who is allowed to do this negative activity. "Peer-pressure" clearly hasn't made a difference.

I'm sticking around (although not very active right now for personal reasons) but I understand the frustration from John Melskens and others as well. If it were up to me those dumb numbers and gilded cameras would go away. Maybe that would encourage more literate comments. And just for the record, when I'm spending more time again at Woophy I don't plan to rate anymore.

It's John's decision to leave. I'm also not happy with it, but please, respect his decision. Don't push him.

Downrating isn't the only reason why he left.

I agree with Zerega, Do not react too hysterically, it has no sense.

Just have respect for each other.

pity, but John's pictures are still on Flickr and usefilm.........we all know.

I think I follow scarlet.......I stop rating and you don't have to rate me anymore, just give good advise/comments......

# Posted: 4 Oct 07 18:02

I was also shocked when I received his email this morning. I think we lost a very good and warm member.
But I can imagine his decision. My pics are sometimes also downrated but John had to deal everytime again with this problem, so I can imagine that he's gone.

Anonymous rating is a solution for this problem that's for sure.

# Posted: 4 Oct 07 18:03

First of all, I agree with Joop in all what he proposed.

Of course I have been also downrated many times, and I must recognize that at the beggining it made me very angry. But in few months I learnt that the ratings, after all, are not so important, so I think that a veteran member like John probably had other reasons to leave woophy further than downrating.

Anyway, Goog Luck to John Melskens!!

And for all the rest: we all should not be so obsessed with ratings!!!

# Posted: 4 Oct 07 18:06

Oh! one more thing...

I remember John Melskens as a good photographer and a good member... but I don't remember at all if he had good or bad ratings... Here you are the importance of rates after all: zero!

I want John back and anonymous rating out.

This is a sore loss.

John enjoyed less protection than his malicious down raters. How sad !
