The Natural Treasure of Hercules' Island
Asinara is the second largest island of Sardinia after Sant'Antioco. It is a narrow territory stretching from North to South, with a very indented coastline, which highlights the great variety of habitats. The island has an extremely peculiar historical, environmental, and juridical situation. Although the first evidences of human presence date back to the Neolithic Age, the environmental features of the area have been preserved thanks to a series of events which gave it the name of "Isola del Diavolo" ("Devil's Island"): it was a health center of quarantine, a camp of imprisonment during World War I, and one of the most important Italian superprisons during the terroristic period of the 70s and during the struggle against the organized crime, until the Park was established. This more than a century long isolation led on the one hand to the creation of the island's aura of charm and mystery, and on the other hand to the indirect conservation of some integral and virgin areas which transformed it into an international unique and invaluable heritage.
Cala D'Oliva
Coming from Trabuccato both from the sea and the land, Cala d’Oliva seems to be like a small coastal village characterized by the white colour of ts buildings. The old part of the village is made up of small buildings with one or two floors while in the higher sector there are bigger buildings, such as: casa del Direttore, uffici della Direzione (rose-coloured), the ex Caserma Agenti, which has become the guest-house of the Park, the workshop, the joinery, the Bunker, the slaughterhouse, the dairy and the building of ex Diramazione Centrale, which has become the Center of Environmental Education.
These buildings are separated from some narrow roads. On the sides of the central street there are two rows of buildings which lead to a little square with a church.

The prison
During the period of legislative transition, in which there was the passage from the codes of the States exisiting before the Union to the enactment of the Zanardelli code, in Italy there is the proposal to establish the so-called "Colonie Agricole" and among the different areas the choice falls on the Asinara: it is 28th June 1885.
The regulation of the Agricultural Penal Colonies came into force on 1st March 1887 with the division of the sentence in two categories: the one of the convicts to the hard labour, and the one of the convicts to all the other penalties.
The stay of the convicts in the colony was mainly linked to the good behaviour and their ability in the agricultural works and in the construction of roads and buildings.
