Having your photo downloaded by someone else is hard to avoid, that's the internet.
I agree with Joop and ortho, when the say they are flattered, but only if one uses one of my pictures, not when they pretend it's theirs.

@Joris: Your advice is the only thing we can do ourselfs. Maybe you could place the terms of use a bit more upfront. Now they are easy to miss, beeing that small at the bottom.

And Sergio, if you're still reading this, ortho is very right, what can happen here, can happen everywhere, unless you take precautions. So just place you're pictures back and keep enjoying this fine site :-))

I also agree with Ortho and Joop. I also feel flattered when some of my pics are used on other sites. That gives me the feeling my pics are good. But I want my name be used but I don't take steps if this is not so.

I only upload pics that are not that important for me. So if somebody steals my pic that's no big deal. The pics that I don't want to be stolen I don't upload. So in that case I take no risks at all.

@Joris, I think most sites have copyrights but their is a difference in where that copyrights are. Some sites it is on the main page and some sites you have to search very hard to find. When someone would use a pic of a site and want to be honest they will look for the copyrgihts. A thief don't look at the copyrights either if it is displayed on the mainpage. I don't whink you can do anything about it and that's no big deal.

Enjoy this site as Martin said and I hope Sergio will come back.

@Oscar_: you write: ''The pics that I don't want to be stolen I don't upload."
do you want to say that we don't see your best photo's here at Woophy?
or: do you keep your private photo's (friends, family for instance) for yourself? (as i do).

@Geert, I sure do upload my most beautiful pictures. But as you discribed I don't upload family, friend and so on on Woophy.
For example: I made a very beautiful pic of the people who I stay on my holiday. I don't want to find those pics in other sites neither I want them to find theirselfs.

So I only upload pics that everybody can make ! Look at my portfolio.

@Pituca
Your name on a frame can easily be removed with PS so that's no copyright mark.

Hi

Copy and artist´ rights do stay a difficult point,

I´m not (yet) depending on sales of photo´s so I don´t mind non-commercial usage but if I would go commercial I agree with sercas taking them of or severly watermark them immediately!

To bad you´re redrawing from Woophy but maybe it´s even flattering that you have or are progressed so far that you´re photo´s are sellable! I liked them in anycase.

So good luck and keep us posted where you went.

Corneel

I was in the process of eliminating my photos from Woophy because I do sell my photos (not alot) but it is part of my work. I mostly sell locally to businesses but if they can freely steal my photos from Woophy then why pay me?
I then stopped deleting my photos and instead put a large water mark on all my photos. I know that it takes from the image but either that or 'Goodbye Woophy'.

olá Gary
Qual programa utiliza para colocar a marca d'água??
Gostei!!!

The program I used to make my watermark is Photoshop. Some people suggested that in reducing the size of photos would stop people stealing the photos but alot of photos are used on websites etc. - for that purpose these photos are perfect.

I now have my web site on mine too so I will get advertising if anyone steals them.

As Cleusa suggested (in Portuguese) that maybe Woophy could put some sort of watermark on all there photos which would also serve as advertising for Woophy.

Gary.

I agree with Gary Walsh and Pituca.
The uploaded picture must be, automatically, watermarked with a big Woophy symbol.
(I don't know if is correct the word "watermarked". Pardon, but I think you understand)

...hm, very interesting discussion.

IMO the biggest problem is, that people think because the internet is free, everything you can find in the internet also is free. This is partly true: It is free to look at. Normally you are not allowed to use any content (text, pictures, graphics, ...) without permission of the owner for other purposes. You will find hundreds of pages dealing with this issue searching for "intellectual property copyright" in the internet.

The difficulty is, to protect content from being stolen. There are a lot of technical options, but when you know how they work, you can bypass these small obstacles very easily.

For pictures you can use a watermark to make them unattractive for thieves. But most of the beautiful pictures shown on woophy would be "destroyed" using a watermark. For this reason i think "watermarking" pictures should be optional.

What woophy can do is to place a copyright notice on top of the (HTML-)page showing the huge picture. Every time you open a picture, you are reminded that it is not allowed to use woophy pictures for commercial use. This is easy to implement and can not be turned off by the user. This precaution can not inhibit thefts, but i think it will lower it because every time you read this you will be reminded that there is a copyright on this pic.

@th- : this seems a good idea to me, at least everyone is aware of the copyright, as you mentioned.
Í don't think you can avoid stealing a 100 % , but you can show everyone our pictures are not free to download.

interesting discution... i can understand when someone is leaving because of this.

and i can understand that some people will be flattered if someone is using his/her picture. i used to think the same way, but not anymore. i want to be asked for my picture. i will say yes, but i want to know what others are doing with my work.
the other day i received a mail at a other fotoside that a company who is making calanders is interested do buy a picture from me. BUY! this is the most flattering thing ever! if they everyone would ask like them, it would be much easier for all of us.

greetings
Bunny
Ps Sercas72 i will miss your pictures.

Hi Bunny

I can image why people want to BUY your pxs. Congratulations. Can you give an indication of the price level of your work? Might be helpful for the (maybe unlikely) case that someone approaches an other Woophy member.

Greetings

Pansa

PS: Would it be a good idea if we exchange high resolutions pxs for our own use (e.g. to print them and hang on the wall)?
