I just photoshopped this photo of some pink flowers (don't know their name), and I duplicated the image, tried to isolate the closest two, and then did the sumie (sp?) filter, and then twiddled with the saturation, shadows, etc.
I'm wondering if it looks too busy, as I tried to get the front two flowers have more impact, and hope that the background would fall into perspective. I'd like to know whether I've achieved this, and what anyone could recommend that I do to the photo.
Thanks in advance :)

i would try do take the picture with f6-f10... with f6 the background gets more blourred, but also the mainflower would not be sharp on every part. i would take a serie of pictures just to figure out witch works the best.
if you do it by photoshop, it is visible untill you are very, very good at it!
try to make it already with the original picture to have the effect you want, then it is easier to work on them.

Thanks! I haven't got a DSLR camera, just a bridge, so I'll have to photoshop it. Perhaps if I blur it in layers?

Working with layers is most of the time the best way to work on your pictures. What bunny says about lens opening is also an option. Which I think is a better option because you don't need to work on your picture afterwards, or just a little.
The picture I think is IMHO a bit to busy, so blurring is a good choice.

Ok, here's my updated version, gaussian blurred the background several times, then tweaked the setting, shadows, saturation, and levels a bit (wow, I sound like I know what I'm doing :) ), and here is the result :)

I think you overdid the coloring a bit... (the flowers in front hurt my eyes) And you could blur a litte more or ad a little white to the background.
It is a good photo to study on don't you think? :-)

Better use a lasso tool to isolate the flower in the front and then do a Gaussian blur or even better a motion blur (rotate).
