At this point near Lent American soldiers in september 1944 crossed the river Waal and captured the bridge near Nijmegen. the city was liberated. but Arnhem was 'a bridge too far'. the war in this part of the Netherlands lasted another five months. (6sep06)

Thingvellir in Iceland
This place may seem very inconspicuous, but in fact it is the place where the very first European democracy since the Roman republic was born. From the 10th century people gathered on this plain to make important political decisions. This parliament was called 'The Thing'. The parliament wasn't held in a building, but very one stayed in tents. Now you can see a little church and the presidential buildings, which are remarkably modest. Perhaps because the plain itself has enough 'grandeur' ?

Ein Kerem (Arabic: عين كارم; Hebrew: עין כרם) (literally, "Spring of the Vineyard"; also Ain Karim) is an artisan village within the municipal boundaries of Jerusalem, Israel. According to Christian tradition, this is the site where John the Baptist was born and so the village became a site of pilgrimage.

sorry, don't know the story... just one of the places I'm dreaming of being able to see with my own eyes... I hope that it's not full of mass tourism... that would be something that destroy the pleasure......

Here is what I can offer:
This is the overhead that collects palazzo pitti in Florence to Palazzo Vecchio, the two homes of the medici family. This corridor, called Vasari corridor was built to easily connect the two homes in case of an emergency, if the medici's had to escape
