hello,
i am a new member and i love this site. i have seen many photos by just clicking on points indicated on the map. i have also noted that the site encourages members to send in as many photos to cover as much of our world as possible.
occasionally, i note that people send in photos that get very low ratings. these often show the buildings or scenes which are commonly depicted in postcards from the place. then maybe viewers find them boring and leave a remark like that or give it a poor rating although it may be a reasonably good photo. they are boring because they are like postcards. but the photos are of things which one associates with the place. for example the opera house in sydney, australia. that is precisely why the postcards feature them. for me to have an idea of what a place looks like i need to see its buildings, landmarks, people in native dress if they have native dresses, before i even need to see the artistically and technically brilliant outstanding other photos from that place.
then sometimes there are photos which may have nothing outstanding in beauty or technique. however, they may be in places so remote that no ordinary tourist would go there. if we want to have a truly comprehensive representation of our world and a map that's alight with points from which we have photos, then we still need these ordinary or even sometimes poor photos (maybe the person sending them only had a cell phone camera). perhaps we need a category where members can make contributions exempt from rating.

For me too, the 'ordinary' photos on Woophy are indispensable. But I wouldn't worry about the ratings. As far as I know, images are not automatically deleted after a certain time if the rating is too low. I know of other sites where this is done but Woophy would lose its charm if these images would have to go. I hope it will stay this way and we can all enjoy clicking on a dot on the map just to see what it looks like over there;-)

I completely agree with your view on Woophy. The charm is that we can browse the world and go to places that we never visited.
But as Wilfred I also don’t see much harm in the rating. Look at it as an extra layer on top of the geographical one.
As long as the rating stimulates more people to do their best then puts people of I think it is useful.
Thanks also for your nice comment on the site

hi again,
thanks wilfred and joris for your replies!
i may be too future-oriented. ;-) you see i also think that as i like this site so much and from my frequent visits to it can see that others love it too, and considering that it is a free site- all of us tend to send in our photos to help build this comprehensive world map through woophy. right?
we try to improve our photos. i no longer just point shoot most of the time but i find myself being more thoughtful and discriminating. will it be better than a 1 in woophy? will it widen the coverage of that world map's scope in terms of subject/culture if not geography? then i send more.
project a year's worth of photos. there will be so many! how much space would be allotted to one member? would there still be no possibility to cull out the low 1s and 2s to make space for newer contributions and still retain a free site? but then maybe the woophy site's great appeal will draw revenue with advertising space like the ones we have on top of the home page.
more power to you and to all of us. happy shooting!

Well we are also thinking about the future. But we are thinking more in terms of filtering instead of deleting pictures.
Keep watching us we are constantly improving the site.
Coming up: a news section in newspaper format, faster downloading of the map
