As a new member to Woophy there are many thinks I need to learn about does and dont's on this site, one of them being showing EXIF data.
I have been asked on several occasions why I am not showing my EXIF data, well I am but it is not always there !!! and the reason being is that I save my files for web use as 'Save For Web' in Photoshop. Now I know that when you do this the EXIF data gets stripped out of the file. Who here is really interested in EXIF data here, and if it is imortant to them then they can ask for it and any other information, I am regularly answering members by mail about things and that is great - I have even posted my EXIF data in my description only to be reminded that I can show it automatically.
The main reason I use this method of saving files is that I often send files to other sites where they limit the size to 300kb so this way I do not have to save several versions of the same file for different web sites - another reason is one more out of respect for the web site hosting our photographs and their server space.
Similarly I ask about actual pixel sizes where I try to limit my files to max 1024 in either height or width - I see that many file sent in here are very large in pixel size ???. That surprises me as why some do that especially as many who comment on photographs do not even look at them enlarged but send themselves in the very large sizes ?.

So with all that I have written if you read it my question really is that do we show EXIF data or not and do we try to keep files sizes down in every respect. Many thanks for any views on this - Mike.

I forgot to mention that I never comment on a photo unless I have viewed it enlarged first.

hi mike,
this is really nice topic for discussion.

in my opinion we must show the exif datas...cause i have learnt lots of things about photography from the exif datas for the years...i have been wathching over 1000 photos everyday average and i am looking for exif for the half of them...
usually i share my exif data except taken with analog cameras...if i can remember the settings i can write them too...

but there is another thing too...most of the people in whoopy do NOT look the photos' artistic side.they look they are nice or not...so i dont think they need exif...

Many thanks Gökhan for your reply and opinion - yes I understand your interest - and that is the reason for this posting - as you mention and by no means am I disrespectful to a lot of members/users here is that there are an enormous amout of general snap shot photo's and viewers that all have their place on Woophy but have no interest in the EXIF data.

Would have been nice to see on this site a place for photo's and photographers with a deeper interest in both their and others work. (I am being very careful what I say here), I have myself made a little text file that if I remember then I paiste it into the description and then fill in the EXIF data so it comes up as a listing, perhaps I shall continue doing that and accept that I will be reminded about the automatic inclusion.

Most of the people in Whoopy are just collecting votes...

Just like you Mike I never comment on a picture without viewing it enlarged first, as a matter of facts I even view a lot of pictures enlarged without commenting on them !

So I like it when the Exif come with the picture because they help me to understand things about the setup of a shot. If they are missing and I really would like to know, well...it's just a small effort to ask the author, nobody ever refused to answer me.

I also like the EXIFs. They are a way to learn more about some technics and sometimes an EXIF is a challenge to try a new way of making pictures.

Thanks Bluesbuster and Arwen - As you say if the EXIF data is not there and its interesting to have the information then it is little effort to ask and I always reply with that and a lot more, I have already had a lot of correspondence and have given tips and advise to those who have asked and appreciated it- its nice to share when there is someone really interested. And yes I also often look at a photo enlarged then quickly go out without commenting and voting as you really see what is there.
The vote collectors I am starting to avoid, sorry.

Mike, you're right, it's much better to see a picture in large before commenting, or just to really appreciate it.
Concerning Exif, I'm often interested on it when I ask myself about the DOF, and other technical points.

I also like to check the EXIF data of a picture, it is also a learning tool. I fully agree with Bluesbuster, you really appreciate a picture when you enlarge it and if the Exif data comes along then it is really helpful and it can be a learning tool specially when you are new at this like I am. A number votes might not help you learn!
I am using a new camera and the EXIF data is never shown, I do not know why, I am not saving my files like Mike is doing. But as many of you say, asking the author shouldn´t be a problem..
Regards to all and thanks Mike for this topic!

Just read this article and I am going to be honest I did look at some at the beginning (the ones that were there) Yes I agree it did give me some idea of what people did distance etc. but at the end of the day personally I do my own thing.
I almost certainly view the large version unlike the serial voters it does show a different quality some good and some bad.
Again, like yourself, Mike as you know I subscribe to other sites and occasionally the data is not downloaded I keep the original files albeit in a RAW state and if people require the info I will supply it... but I have a tendency to dabble in different techniques and I may try 2 or 3 processes to achieve what I have got.
Sometimes I am just happy to have taken the shot and I don't even look at what I have till I get home and down load.
Perhaps I should take a little more care and start thinking what I am doing .....you never know somebody might like what I do one day........ I promise I will be more careful in the future
