Yes, like miguel said, the PH is an F, as in PHotograph. (And not Potograph?)

And here is why:

photograph (n.) Look up photograph at Dictionary.com
1839, "picture obtained by photography," coined by Sir John Herschel from photo- + -graph "instrument for recording." It won out over other suggestions, such as photogene and heliograph. Neo-Anglo-Saxonists prefer sunprint. The verb and photography also are first attested 1839, all from a paper read before the Royal Society on March 14, 1839.

photon in Greek means lite and obviously photography has a lot to do with light!

Here is something about the letter "PHI" pronounced "FI" from which the pronunciation F of PH comes:

... and how do you pronounce the double O?
I think one should pronounce Wo-ophy, avoinding the usual sound of the double O like in "saloon" or "platoon". This, because of the same reason that Miguel pointed out, the name stands for "wOrld Of Photography" and the two Os are apart... (o my God, a Portugese and an Italian who give English lessons....!)

Dear Devish,

Nice to read your information and think about a bit of Photography History (almost a new topic could be opened!).

Indeed it was Sir John Herschel to coin the term photography as well as applied the terms negative and positive to photography, in 1839. He also discovered that "hyposulphite of soda" could be used as a photographic fixer, to "fix" pictures and make them permanent (1839). But the long process of discovering how a photograph could be obtained, first, and permanently stay, after, began many years before (though 1839 is the year of the announcement of this new media).

We can praise all these names, and many more, in this process:
- Professor Johann Heinrich Schulze (german) for his accidental creation of the first photo-sensitive compound.(1727)
- Niépce (french) creates a permanent image in 1826. The first real photograph, the reknown "View from the Window at Le Gras".
- William Henry Fox Talbot (english) created permanent (negative) images using paper soaked in silver chloride and fixed with a salt solution. Talbot created positive images by contact printing onto another sheet of paper. He is, so, the inventor of the negative / positive photographic process. (1834)
- Louis Daguerre (french) created images on silver-plated copper, coated with silver iodide and "developed" with warmed mercury. The Daguerreotype was the "Polaroid of the day", producing a single image which was not reproducible (unlike the Talbot process). (1837)
- Frederick Scott Archer (english) improved the negative/positive process permitting unlimited reproductions (1851).
- and so on till today
Anyone alone could have done it! Always a process to victory in life

Greets from Porto,
Miguel

yes Miguel, something on the history of photography could be really nice, we should start and think about something all together, maybe something like "Did you know?" on the main page of Woophy with some interesting fact on what happened in photography that day or week. And maybe something in the newsletter that has to do with photography's history every month.

And since we are talking about new ideas, a nice thing to talk about could be photography expositions around the world. A special section of the forum where people can point out interesting expositions or museums they hear of or visit. I wouldn't mind to go back to the ALinari's museum of photography in Florence and tell you all about it!
