Hi everybody!

I want to buy a remote control (one of these, to be clear URL) and would like your thoughts about it.

My main goal is to take astronomical photographs, those pictures where you see the hole sky moving around. Will a remote keep my camera's lens open for even hours?

Has any one of you got any experience with one of these? Any suggestions on other uses?

Do the cheap ones have the "Block mode" as well as the expensive ones? I am asking this because I find some for really high prices and others for really cheap and I don't notice that much of a difference.

Thank you, Devish.

well devish, that depend on your camera...

my camera (nikon D70s) has a bulb funktion that means that when i start the button then to stop it i have to push it again. can be hours after the start. just check to have a good akku) a remote controle is important if you use tripod and longer shutterspeeds.

i have one with a cable and a friend of mine without. she has alsways problems with it.... (separate bateries, no conections, especially if there are other cameras around, no connections in the heat or cold... problems anywhere)
i never had never trouble with mine with cable.

hope i could help you a little

Thanks for your answer Coffejunkie, I forgot to say that I have a Canon 400D, to use my bulb function I have to keep the button pushed the hole time and even if I didn't I still would be afraid of mooving the camera while pushing it. I would buy a remote with a cable that can lock, my main idea is to take pictures of stars rotating on the tripod.
Thanks again,
Devish.

yes, with the cable version you usually can lock it! it is very handy. with the one without cable you have to hold it all the time...

Are those remotes suitable to set only on DSLR cameras or also on compacts?

I don't know...I would try looking on the web page of your camera's brand and see if the remote is included in the accessories for your camera. My guess would be no, but maybe someone who knows more can answer better.
