Almost 3 years ago I was runned down by a Motorcycle while picking up my camera by a road. As a result of that I had a bad accident with quite many injuries of which I'm still recovering. Since then on, I had a shor of ambiguous feeling about cameras, photography...and whatever could remind me the accident. So that I've been 3years whitout camera. Today I'm quite decided to challenge and overcome my fears and ghosts and I'm thinking about buyind a new camera. The point is that, during this 3 years, digital cameras have evolved a lot while I was "sleeping" and now I feel a little bit out of track... Lately, I've been searching a little and I've read a lot about CANON(MAINLY 5D AND 40D) AND last but not least NIKON D-300. I'm from europe and I'm going to USA next month. I guess is a good chance to buy my camera once I'll be there(at San Francisco) or by the internet. Could anybody give me some advice about which one to choose and where to buy it?? Which webs do you think are reliable to buy? Any comments and advice will be wellcome. PD; sorry by the mistakes I probably have done with my english. HELP, I NEED SOMBDY, HELP, YOU KNOW I NEED SOMEONE... THANKS A LOT!

you must first figure out what kind of camera you need and how much money you wanna spend on it. i have a dsrl nikon (D70s) and a'm happy with it. i will buy me as soon as i have the money for it a D300... i chose my camera by searching the info in the internet and someone gave me the advise to take the cameras in the hand and then i will know witch one i wanna buy. after all the information in the internet i wanted to buy a canon. but after i hold it in my hand and compared it with the nikon in the other hand, i knew right away witch camera i want! my advise: make a list of all cameras you are interested in and then go shopping. somewhere in a big warehouse where you can hold them and look witch camera is smooth and feels right in your hands! so you can make a choise and buy the camera in the US... the differences between the cameras are becoming smaller and smaller...
greezt and have fun by buying your cam! Bunny
congrats to your power and strength to fight your demons and gosts. it takes a lot to fight them! good luck

If the money is no problem I suggest you to buy the Nikon D3 (about $4600 - body) ... the best DSLR at the moment (excluding Hasselblad, but this is another story, another price). You can find many stores at www.ebay.com

I agree there is no substitute for "hands on" comparisons in a store, but a favorite online source for me is www.bhphotvideo.com . I believe Canon USA currently has a rebate progam for both the 5D and 40D models.
Another good review site is www.fredmiranda.com
Also be sure to ask about international warranty availability

If you want a small pocket-sized camera with a big zoom range I can recommend the Panasonic DMC-TZ3. It has a Leica lens and 10x zoom with image stabiliser. I bought mine a few months ago (£170 via Amazon) and love it; however I am not a proper photographer but a geographer of the 'point and shoot' variety!

Hellow to everybody. ; )
Sorry for the delay. This is just to say THANK YOU ALL for you help and the interest and empathy you've shown with me.
And also to let you know that I finally bougth my camera, after so much thinking, not only for the device itself but for the amount of money(I dont usually expend such amount of money)... I finally bougth the NIKON D-300 and I'm very happy with it. I'm still struggling to learn how to use it properly and how to handle all the possibilities if offers... but I am really satisfied for giving this step forward, pretty important to me.
I had to say it,... special thanks to Ruben Fretsbo, the site you sent me was really helpfull "MUCHAS GRACIAS, DE VERAS". Also special gratitude to Bunny and Silvia for their "encouraging" and charm mails. And last but not least to Paulo; I guess you're right, yes you are... but I cannot afford that. Thank you all for giving me a hand to bring me back to the track of photography.
PD: If you know about any "text" of photography you think is worth to buy or download(best if possible), let me know.
P.D; to Silvia; I'll be really carefull with roads and motorcycles from now on. ...Ah, y me encanta tu tierra!
