Are all photos exactly as they seem?
I spotted a telephone kiosk in an idyllic setting - except for the fact that it had a huge, ugly telegraph pole placed between the kiosk and the loch. A dilemma for me as Photoshop is not my best friend But with careful positioning of the composition in the viewfinder and with clever (!) cropping ......... Hey VoilĂ .....no telegraph pole

So, I have confessed! How many more Woophyites would feel better for making a confession? I dare you!

I think there would be a lot of bad pictures on woophy without a little cheating! This image:
is heavily edited from this:

Hi Scoonie, well I must confess sometimes I do it too. I made this close up of my daughter on the beach, when I downloaded it on my PC I saw some little figures on the right side, who were a bit disturbing the pict, so I let disapeared them. I think we all do this sometimes to make the pict more beautiful. Greetz, Dieuwertje

Sometimes a simple crop can create a "different" picture from the original. This picture

became this:

Sometimes it takes more work. I originally submitted this photo:

After suggestions by Woopy members I reworked it to this:

We have had forum discussions about how much you can/should modify a photo. Cropping, burning/dodging and similar work has gone on in darkrooms since the early days of black and white photography. There is a point at which I think the work should be mentioned in the caption with a photo, but I don't think it is necessary for basic work to make a photo more pleasing to the eye. However, it is fun to see what will come up in a forum like this.

This is a combination of 4 photos: the memorial, the threatening sky, the birds and the plane. A bit of work in PS and ..... presto

Great topic Scoonie! Before the advent of digital photgraphy a popular version of Murphy's Law was "Between a photographer and his subject there are always N telephone wires, where N>3". But let's keep the distinction of the many different things one can do before posting a pic. Among them, 4 are the most usual: a) cropping b) changing contrast or brightness c) adjusting colours d) cloning away disturbing elements.
a) and b) are exactly the same thing all photographers of old times did when printing in the darkroom. So, IMO, there is no need of asking "to confess or not to confess"
c) seems to be a bit different. But consider that when your camera creates a jpeg file, it is already doing a process involving intepretation and correction of color values. So our additional editing is simply a step further in the process of creating a digital image;
as regards d), I think that the Clone Tool is among those inventions that have set mankind free from brute slavery, like the washing machine or the contraceptive pill... Seriuosly speaking, as far as we clone away poles, parked cars, distant persons or other unimportant but disturbing elements, I think that we have no sin to confess.

BTW: in this pic of mine:

on the river bank, bottom left, there was a huge ugly SUV parked ... I cloned the snow instead. And I do not feel guilty at all!

This is becoming very interesting!
I started the forum, not that we should feel the 'need' to confess but so that we could have some fun seeing the befores and afters...... and there are some great ones already!
And that is an amazing photo Pansa! Hats off to you! But as I said photoshop is beyond me!
I am still with A B C of TBM!! D eludes me!
I shall post my original photo as soon as I can so that its is there for comparison sake.
Let's see more befores and afters!!

@Geert, Hi! Thank's for your input! I'm not sure I like the edited version either. Maybe because it's a little boring?.. A little adjustment of the light and some cropping may be the best sollution with the original.

Scoonie. If " confession " is called for ( and that appeals to my dour Presbyterian soul ! ), then I plead guilty. Although I don't have Photoshop, ALL my pictures have been manipulated to some degree ( on iPhoto ) - increasing the contrast / colour saturation, cropping, etc. I hope that doesn't make me a bad person !

Not at all Geoffrey! It seems we are all guilty and although confession is good for the soul where woophy is concerned there is absolutely no need!! Regards Lorraine

I use Photoshop's RAW converter facilities very often because images directly from my camera can be a little flat and lifeless at times, especially when shooting in jpg. My intention is to provide as visually attractive an image as possible, and I make no apologies for it.
I can usually spot a photograph that has been digitally manipulated in some form or other and in my opinion a large number posted in Woophy have been digitally adjusted.
I contend that it is such common practice as to be taken for granted without comment now that almost all photographs now have to be computer processed, both in-camera and when downloading (and I haven't even considered the act of printing them on an inkjet yet).
How about displaying your enhancement skills by posting before and after pics?
